Previewing Wine Before Serving…Watch For Cork Taint

I went on a date at a pricey Palm Beach restaurant a while back. Being the gentlemen I am and, of course, the 22 year old self involved show-off I was, I ordered a high-end bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from the state of Washington. A few minutes later, the waiter returned to the table and asked if I would like to sample the wine prior to service. He also showed me the cork. Thinking it was very panache; I looked at the cork and tasted the wine. I then thought to myself, why would he offer me the cork and a sip prior to serving my date? I’m sure the same question has crossed your mind.

It boils down to the humidity and temperature of the wine. There are two general facts about wine and humidity to consider. First, in a high humidity environment a wine bottle will start to form mold. The mold tends to grab a hold of the cork. This is one of the reasons the waiter offered the cork to me – to inspect it before serving the glass of wine. Mold, a bacterium, will start to change the chemical composition of wine. Some mold is not a problem, but too much will completely alter the flavor of wine. The second fact is that low humidity can cause the cork to crack. A slight crack in the cork will expose the bottle to air prematurely and increase the chance of finding tiny cork particles in your expensive bottle of wine! Aeration of a red wine will cause it to become sour. Increased sourness of a wine can make your taste buds go numb. When your taste buds go numb, you can’t enjoy the full experience of your food. Not only has the aerification ruined your wine its ruining your food experience as well!

Another reason a waiter offers a preview of the wine is to make sure there isn’t cork taint. Cork taint has many of the same effects as airation. It occurs when the cork has been exposed to poor surroundings prior to bottling, either from the forest conditions, storage, or during the processing period. Tainting occurs when the cork absorbs a compound called trichloroanisold or TCA. TCA causes a strong musty smell, and mostly occurs in natural corks.

Further, you are offered to taste the wine to determine if the wine is to your liking. There are many guidelines regarding the temperature of wine. However, the key barometer is how it tastes to YOU. Decide if the temperature is to your liking. Is it too hot or too cold? If the wine is not at a temperature you prefer, it may taste sour or present an unpleasant after taste.

So, when the waiter offers you a sample of the wine before service to others or offers you the cork for inspection, seize the opportunity! Look for cracks in the cork or mold. Smell the wine. Do you notice a musty aroma, like a damp basement or clothes that have sat in the washing machine for too long? Taste the wine. Is it too hot or too cold? Does it taste sour? Does it taste good? If any of these concerns arise, don’t be embarrassed… SEND IT BACK!

It really depends on the wine… I’ve had wines that oxidize after a day and others that hold up well for 4 days or so. Some wines have more resistance to oxidation than others… due to phenolic and anthocyan concentration, level of free SO2 and the age of the wine. As wine interacts with oxygen, the alcohol oxidizes and forms by-products such as acetaldehyde which cause the wine to smell and taste flat and dull. Given enough time, acetobacter will cause the alcohol to convert to acetic acid, ie. the wine turns to vinegar.

What are Weighted Sit Ups and How Do They Help You?

You’ve heard of sit ups, you’ve heard of push ups, and you’ve heard of crunches, but what on earth are weighted sit ups? This is a good question and one that many people don’t know about, despite the fact that they have heard all about sit ups.

So what are weighted sit ups and how do they help you? Well, to put it very simply, weighted sit ups are merely sit ups done using weights to give you more resistance when you are doing the sit ups. And in many cases you are doing the full sit ups instead of merely the crunch version of the sit ups.

To do weighted sit ups, you have a few options available to you. You can either perform these weighted sit ups using the old fashioned method of the floor, or you can perform them using a piece of exercise equipment known as a sit up bench. And if you are using a sit up bench, you now also have the option of using it to do normal weighted sit ups, or to do weighted sit ups with more resistance in them.

The weighted sit ups with more resistance can be accomplished by lifting and securing the sit up bench to about a 30 degree angle off the horizontal. You get on the bench as normal, holding a weighted pole or some such thing which you can grip tightly, behind your head, and then you lower yourself towards the seat of the bench, going close to, but not touching, the actual bench itself. Then you lever yourself upwards using your ab muscles so that you are parallel with the floor, before repeating the process all over again.

This is one way if doing weighted sit ups. The other more traditional method simply utilises you, the floor, a mat preferably, and a weight which you can comfortably grip in your hands. When you have all of these the next thing that you need to do is to get into the sit up position. You know the one, lie flat on the floor (on your mat), and bend your knees in towards you keeping your feet flat on the floor.

The difference you will be facing this time however, will come from your having the weight in your hands. So, comfortably grip the weight in your hands at about chest level, making sure that neither your hands, nor the weight are resting on your chest. Lift your upper body up in a sit up curl, bringing yourself towards your knees.

The trick to doing these particular type of weighted sit ups is not in the rising however, the trick lies in the going-down part of the sit up. Instead of just falling back down as fast as you can, control your descent so that you are contracting your ab muscles in order to exert that control. It is when you’re doing this, that the true benefit of doing weighted sit ups comes to pass.

Again, this is with laproscopic surgery. Open surgery opens greater chances of complications and greater time for healing. I would say 6-8 weeks to heal to the point of STAYING upright all day/night.

Pharaoh and his army had seen the miracle, how the sea had parted, but being the pretender that he was, Pharaoh turned to his men and proclaimed: “Look! The sea has opened at my command so that I may follow those rebels and arrest them!” They rushed across the parted waters, and when they were midway, Allah commanded the sea to return to its former state.

Terror-stricken Pharaoh, realizing his end had come, declared out of fear: “I believe that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah in Whom the children of Israel believe, and I am of those who surrender to Him.” But Allah did not accept this declaration from the tyrant, and the waters closed over him, drowning him and his entire army.

Almighty Allah narrated: And We inspired Moses, saying: “Take away My slaves by night, verily, you will be pursued.” Then Pharaoh sent callers to all the cities. Saying: “Verily! These indeed are but a small band. And verily, they have done what has enraged us; but we are host all assembled, amply fore-warned.”

So, We expelled them from gardens and springs, treasures, and every kind of honorable place. Thus (We turned them Pharaoh’s people) out, and We caused the children of Israel to inherit them.

So they pursued them at sunrise. And when the two hosts saw each other, the people of Moses said: “We are sure to be overtaken.”

Moses said: “Nay, verily! With me is my Lord, He will guide me.”

Then We inspired Moses saying: “Strike the sea with your stick.” And it parted, and each separate (part of that sea water) became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain.

Then We brought near the others (Pharaoh’s party) to that place. And We saved Moses and all those with him. Then We drowned the others. Verily! In this is indeed a sign (or a proof), yet most of them are not believers. And verily, your Lord! He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.” (Ch 26:52-68 Quran)

In another surah Almighty Allah narrated: And We took the children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh with his hosts followed them in oppression and enmity, till when drowning overtook him, he sai: “I believe that La ilaha illa huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but) He, in whom the children of Israel believe, and I am one of the Muslims (those who submit to Allah’s Will).”

Now (you believe) while you refused to believe before and you were one of the mufsideen (evildoers, corrupts, etc.). So this day We shall deliver your dead body out from the sea that you maybe a sign to those who come after you! Allah the Exalted revealed: And We brought the children of Israel (with safety) across the sea, and they came upon a people devoted to some of their idols (in worship). They said: “O Moses! Make for us an ilaha (a god) as they have aliah (gods).”

He said: “Verily, you are a people who know not (the Majesty and Greatness of Allah and what is obligatory upon you, to worship none but Allah Alone, the One and the Only God of all that exists).”

Moses added: “Verily, these people will be destroyed for that which they are engaged in idol-worship. And all that they are doing is in vain.” He said: “Shall I seek for you an ilaha (a god) other than Allah, while He has give you superiority over the Alamin (mankind, and jinn of your time).”

And remember when We rescued you from Pharaoh’s people, who were afflicted you with the worst torment, killing your sons, and letting your women live. And in that was a great trial from your Lord. (Ch 7:138-141 Quran)

DC is not know for having much of a selection of anime items. There are a handful of small stores in and around DC, but I have never found anything interesting at them they, they are not close to each other, and they all seem to charge an arm and a leg relative to what you can find the stuff online for. Most of the Anime stores I have been to with a good selection were on the west coast. One thing DC area does have a fair number of is Anime conventions. Although most of them are not in DC proper there are some ones that are not far away for example Katsucon , anime USA, otakon, anime mid atlantic ect… The biggest ones in the area are Otakon and Katsucon. Baltimore comic con is also coming up I think this weekend, but that is more comic book focused.

Personally, I think myscene.com is the best website. Of course it’s for little girls(7-13) but when your a girl that loves fashion and everything about it, then it’s really not a big deal.
