The Canal Boat A Brief History

The Canal Boat – A Brief History

A canal boat (also known as a narrowboat or narrow boat) is a boat of a distinctive design, made to fit the narrow canals of England and Wales.

Narrowboats at Calcutt Boats marina

In the context of British Inland Waterways, “narrow boat” refers to the original working boats built in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries for carrying goods on the narrow canals (where locks and bridge holes would have a minimum width of 7 feet (2.1 m)). The term is extended to modern “narrowboats” used for recreation and occasionally as homes, whose design is an interpretation of the

Canal Boat Terminology

Purists tend to use the term with a space (narrow boat) when referring to an original boat or a replica, and to omit the space when referring to a modern boat used for leisure or as a residence – but this is not a hard and fast rule.[citation needed] The single word ‘narrowboat’ has been adopted by authorities such as British Waterways and the magazine Waterways World to refer to all boats built in the style and tradition of the narrow canal locks.

Although some canal boats were built to a design based on river barges, it is incorrect to refer to a narrowboat (or narrow boat) as a barge. In the context of the British inland waterways, a barge is usually a much wider, cargo-carrying boat or a modern boat modelled on one, certainly more than 7 feet (2.1 m) wide.

It is also incorrect (or at least incongruous) to refer to a narrowboat as a longboat, although this name was sometimes used in the Midlands in working-boat days.

Usage has not quite settled down as regards (a) boats based on narrowboat design, but too wide for narrow canals; or (b) boats the same width as narrowboats but based on other types of boat.

Canal Boat Size

The key distinguishing feature of a narrowboat is its width: it must be no more than 7 feet (2.13 m) wide to navigate the British narrow canals. Some old boats are very close to this limit (often built 7 feet 1½ inches/2.17 metres or slightly wider), and can have trouble using locks that are not quite as wide as they should be because of subsidence. Modern boats are usually 6 feet 10 inches (2.08 m) wide to guarantee easy passage everywhere.

Because of their slenderness, some narrowboats seem very long. The maximum length is about 70 feet (21 m), the length of most locks on the narrow canals. However, modern narrowboats tend to be shorter than this, so that they can cruise anywhere on the connected network of British canals – including on the “wide” canals (built for wider, but shorter, boats). The shortest lock on the main network is Salterhebble Middle Lock on the Calder and Hebble Navigation, at about 56 feet (17 m) long. However, the C&H is a wide canal, so the lock is about 14 feet 2 inches (4.32 m) wide. This makes the largest “go-anywhere-on-the-network” narrowboat slightly longer (about 60 feet) than the straight length of the lock, because it can (with a certain amount of “shoehorning”) lie diagonally. Some locks on isolated waterways are as short as 40 feet (12.2 m).

Hire fleets on British canals can contain narrowboats of many lengths from about 30 feet (9.1 m) upwards, to allow parties of different sizes or different budgets to hire a boat.

Development – traditional working canal boats

The first working canal boats played a key part in the economic changes accompanying the British Industrial Revolution. They were wooden boats drawn by a horse walking on the canal towpath led by a crew member, often a child. Narrowboats were chiefly designed for carrying cargo, though there were some packet boats, carrying passengers, letters, and parcels.

Boatmen’s families originally lived ashore, but in the 1830s as canals started to feel competition from the new railways, families (especially of owner/skippers of independent single boats) started to take up home afloat. This was partly because they could no longer afford rents, partly to provide extra hands to work the boats harder, faster and further, and partly to keep families together. However, as late as 1858, a “Household Words” article states that the Grand Junction Canal company did not allow the boatmen’s families on board – and the crew of the non-stopping (“fly”) boat in the article (the skipper, two crewmen, and a ‘youth’) is said to be typical.

Historic working narrowboats on the Macclesfield Canal in Cheshire, England. The motor boat at the front “Forget Me Not” is pulling along an unpowered butty “Lilith”. This was the traditional working style used on working boats after motor boats became common.

The rear portion of the boat became the cosy “boatman’s cabin”, familiar from picture postcards and museums, famous for its space-saving ingenuity and for its interior made attractive by a warm stove, a steaming kettle, gleaming brass, fancy lace, painted housewares, and decorated plates. Although such descriptions rarely consider the actual comfort of a large family working an extremely hard and long day, and sleeping in the one tiny cabin, it is no doubt true that at the time there were many workers in harder, indoor, trades with less healthy conditions and worse accommodation where the family were separated for long hours rather than being together all day. Nonetheless it was impossible for such mobile families to send their children to school, and most boat people remained illiterate and ostracised by those living ‘on the bank’.

As diesel and steam replaced the tow horse in the early twentieth century, it became possible to move more cargo with the same manpower by towing a second unpowered boat, commonly referred to as a “butty”, “buttyboat” or “butty boat”. There was now no horse to look after, but someone had to steer the butty, unless on a wide canal such as the Grand Union Canal where the two boats could be roped side-to-side or ‘breasted up’, and handled as one while working locks.

Cargo-carrying by narrow boat was almost extinguished as a way of life between 1945 and the last regular long distance traffic finishing in 1970. However some traffics continued into the 1980s and beyond including over 2 million tonnes of aggregate carried on the Grand Union (River Soar) from 1976 to 1996, latterly using wide beam barges however, and aggregate currently carried by narrow boats (and wide barges) between Denham and West Drayton on the Grand Union Canal. A few people are doing their best to keep the tradition alive, mostly by “one-off” deliveries rather than regular runs, or by selling goods such as coal to other boaters.

There are many enthusiasts dedicated to restoring the remaining old boats, often members of the Historic Narrow Boat owners Club and there are also many replicas ornately painted with the same traditional designs, usually of roses and castles. If the boat is not horse-drawn, it may have a refurbished, slow-revving, vintage diesel engine, and there are even some steam-driven narrow boats such as the ex-Fellows Morton and Clayton steamer President.

Painted decoration on canal boats

Decoration on a traditional English canal boat: roses on the water can (top) and castles on the open doors to the cabin

By the latter part of the 19th century it was common practice to paint roses and castles on both narrow boats themselves and their fixtures and fittings. Common sites include the doors to the cabin, the water can or barrel and the side of the boat along with ornate lettering giving the boat’s name and owner.

The origin of the roses and castles found on canal boats is unclear. The first written reference to them appears to be in an 1858 edition of the magazine Household Words in one of a series of articles titled “On the Canal” but while this shows that the art form must have existed by this date it doesn’t provide us with an origin. For some time, a popular suggestion was that it had some form of Gypsy origin, however there does not appear to be a significant link between the Gypsy and boating communities. Other suggestions include transfer of styles from the clock-making industry (in particular the decoration on the face), the japanning industry or the pottery industry. There is certainly a similarity in style and a geographical overlap, but no solid proof of a link. There are similar styles of folk art in Scandinavia, Germany, Turkey and Bangladesh.

In the eighteenth century, the similar Dutch “Hinderloopen” paintwork would only have been a sailing barge journey away from the Thames. There is also an article in the Midland Daily Telegraph of 22 July 1914 that credits the practice painting of water cans, at least, to a Mr Arthur Atkins. The date of the events make the claim possible, but would require the Household Words article to be reporting on the very start of a phenomenon, rather than – as its tone suggests – something that had existed for some time. Until further evidence comes to light, it is impossible to support or deny the claim that Arthur Atkins was responsible for the start of the practice and thus the origin of the paintings remains uncertain.

While the practice declined as commercial use of the canals dwindled, it has seen something of a revival in recent times with the emergence of leisure boating. Narrowboat decoration with roses and castle themes are a reasonably common sight on today’s canals, although these may utilise cheaper computer-printed vinyl transfers in place of the traditional craft of hand-painted designs.

Modern canal boats

The number of licensed boats on canals and rivers managed by British Waterways (BW), a government organisation, was estimated at about 27,000 in 2006. There are perhaps another 5,000 unlicensed boats kept in private moorings or on other waterways. Most of the boats on BW waterways are steel cruisers popularly referred to as narrowboats.

Modern narrowboats are used for annual holidays, weekend breaks or as permanent residences. Usually, they have steel hulls and a steel superstructure, but when they were first being developed for leisure use in the 1970s glass re-inforced plastic (fibre-glass) or timber was often used for the superstructures. They are usually powered by modern diesel engines, and are fitted inside to a high standard. There will be at least 6 feet (1.8 m) internal headroom, and similar domestic facilities as a small landward home: central heating, flush toilets, shower or even bath, four-ring hobs, oven, grill, microwave oven, and refrigerator; quite a few also have satellite television and mobile broadband via the use of 3G broadband technology. Externally, their resemblance to traditional boats can vary from a faithful imitation (false “rivets”, and copies of traditional paintwork) through “interpretation” (clean lines and simplified paintwork) through to a free-style approach which does not try to pretend in any way that this is a traditional boat.

They are owned by individuals, shared by a group of friends (or by a more formally organised syndicate), rented out by holiday firms, or used as cruising hotels. A few boats are lived on permanently: either based in one place (though long-term moorings for residential narrowboats are currently very difficult to find) or continuously moving around the network (perhaps with a fixed location for the coldest months, when many stretches of canal are closed by repair works or “stoppages”).

Modern canal boat types

On most narrowboats steering is by a tiller, as it was on all working narrow boats, and the steerer stands at the stern of the boat, aft of where a person emerges from the hatchway and rear doors at the top of the steps up from the cabin. The steering area comes in three basic types, each meeting different needs in terms of maximising internal space; having a more traditional appearance; having a big enough rear deck for everyone to enjoy summer weather or long evenings; or protection for the steerer in bad weather. Each type has its strong advocates. However, the boundaries are not fixed, and some boats blur the categories as designers try out slightly different arrangements and combinations.

Canal boats with traditional stern

Many modern canal boats retain the traditional layout of a small open, unguarded “counter” or deck behind the rear doors from which the crew can step onto land. It is possible to steer from the counter, but this is not very safe, with the propeller churning below only one misstep away. The length of the “tiller extension” allows the steerer to stand more safely on the top step, forward of the rear doors (on a working boat, this step would have been over the top of the coal box). On cold days, the steerer can even close the rear doors behind them, and be in relative comfort, their lower body in the warmth of the cabin, and only their upper body emerging from the hatchway and exposed to the elements. In good weather, many trad-stern steerers sit up on the hatchway edge, a high vantage point giving good all-round visibility. On trad boats, the bow “well-deck” forms the main outside viewing area, because the traditional stern is not large enough for anyone other than the steerer to stand on safely.

Canal boats with cruiser stern

Cruiser stern narrowboats are designed to allow more people to be on deck during the reasonably good weather of the British summer holiday season. The hatch and rear doors are farther forward than on a traditional boat, creating a large open deck between counter and rear doors, protected by a rail (perhaps with seats) around the back and sides. At the rear, a “cruiser” narrowboat looks very different from traditional boats. The large rear deck provides a good social space or al fresco dining area, but in the winter (or the occasionally less than perfect weather of the British Summer) the steerer is quite unprotected from wind and rain. The lack of an enclosed engine room means that engine heat does not contribute to keeping the boat warm and there is wasted space above the deck area. The name for this style arises because the large open rear deck resembles that of the large rear cockpits common on glass-fibre (GRP) river cruisers. The “cruiser” stern also allows the engine to be located under the deck and not in the cabin as it is in a traditional-stern boat. Although this then makes access to the engine for maintenance more difficult,[citation needed] it does have the advantage that the engine is not located in the cabin and the ensuing noise and smell are not as much of an issue.

Canal boats with semi-traditional stern

A semi-traditional stern is a compromise to gain some of the “social” benefits of a cruiser stern, while retaining a more traditional design and providing some protection for the steerer in bad weather or in cooler seasons. As with the cruiser stern, the deck is extended back from the hatch and rear doors, but in this case most of the deck is protected at the sides by walls which extend back from the cabin sides – giving a more sheltered area for the steerer and companions, usually with lockers to sit on. The engine is located under the deck, much like a cruiser, again allowing a separation between the cabin and the engine bay, with the steps down to the cabin being located past the false sides of the “semi-trad” social area.

Canal boats with a butty stern

A butty boat is an un-powered boat traditionally with a larger rudder with (usually) a wooden tiller (known as an elum, a corruption of helm as the steering does not benefit from the force of water generated by the propeller. The tiller is usually removed and reversed in the rudder-post socket to get it out of the way when moored. A few butty boats have been converted into powered narrowboats like NB Sirius. The term butty is thought to have originated from the French, bateau, meaning boat.

Centre cockpit canal boats

A small number of steel narrowboats dispense with the need for a rear steering deck entirely, by imitating some river cruisers in providing wheel steering from a central cockpit.

Porcelain Dolls

Many serious collectors, when it comes to gathering dolls aren’t interested within the dolls that have recently come out or have been lately produced. Severe collectors, instead, have their sights set on vintage dolls. These dolls are much additional valuable than their a lot more recent counterparts. Antique dolls are rich in history and, if kept in good shape throughout the many years, can turn out to be an invaluable addition to any critical vintage doll collection.

It will have to have been taken care of all through the many years for an antique doll to turn out to be valuable. Any really serious collector is not going to be thinking about dolls which might be missing eyes or even limbs. The antique dolls that may fetch large sums for the seller, are those which are kept wholly intact and are in complete mint problem.

Mending Dolls

Of course, if a doll is an vintage and is missing some parts, say an eye or a leg, the dolls may be repaired. You can find shops out there who will repair your vintage dolls to make them look like new. It really should be noted, however, that many collectors out there are extremely picky about what antique dolls they are going to accept for their collection. They won’t tolerate a doll they considered to become mended and take their vintage doll accumulating extremely seriously. Attempting to pass the antique doll off as mint condition isn’t recommended as any critical collector will be in a position to tell almost instantly. Mending could be done to restore your vintage doll to its full beauty if the doll needs it.

It is possible to discover vintage dolls at specialty doll stores and even on-line. Quite a few vintage dolls arrive from collectors as well as far more come from people today who when owned them and then died. This is where we get most of our antique dolls today. They’re left over or sold with peoples estates. Some of these vintage dolls are a hundred many years old or much more. You can imagine what an artifact like which is worth. Contemplating most of the vintage dolls are hand made, the amount is likely more than you expect.

Any time you wish you can begin antique doll gathering. Be prepared to spend a lot of money once you find a excellent vintage doll retailer. Doll accumulating is not low cost, specially not antique doll amassing, but it’s worth it if you take into account all of the extra friends you’ll must fill up your new doll room.

I have an antique procelean doll, 2″ tall, blond, painted hair and face, stands on her 2 flat feet, value?

Anyone familiar with this antique doll. My mother owned it for over 50 years. Jointed shoulders, legs not jointed, 2″ tiny.

This is referred to as an all Bisque or sugar candy doll. Many of these dolls were made in Japan and if you look on the back you should see the country of manufacture. These dolls have been produced since the 1800′s but German and Japan were most popular in the 1920′s and because of the world Wars they lost out in Germany and they were produced in japan. The ones from Japan were not fired with the color and it will wash off, so you have to be very careful. The French one produced over time are the most expensive and sell for thousand of dollars. Referred to as French Pupée de Poche – Mignonette or small pocket doll.

I personally have a collection of these dolls but I do not have the money for a french one. Some are even used in doll houses. I have a couple of places for you to see them on Dollreference.com

http://www.dollreference.com/all_bisque_dolls.html

This should give you a good start for your research, Hope this helped

Generation X Meets Baby Boomer Dater

Nowadays with the introduction of the internet dating, one can be close to someone who they have never physically met.  It is far easier to connect with common bonds and to build relationships. This also extends to people from different generations.

Generally when matching couples, it is easier to make sure that they come from the same generation to ensure a good match. This immediately facilitates communication & understanding as both partners have the same background developed in the same worldwide environment.

Since the introduction of online dating and the presence of the social networks it has become easier to assess and sift out the process to match up with other singles from all over the world.   Online dating for over 40′s is the perfect environment to encourage finding a suitable partner or friend because age & individual preferences are often listed. This cuts out a lot of all the preliminaries that go on in the ‘real world’, where a couple need to find out whether they match on these most crucial aspects.

The XGen who are now in their prime generally have a strong need for space & freedom in their relationships.  So this fits well with over 40′s online dating relationships. However human nature has a continuum through all the generations.  Most people over forty generally understand who and what their requirements are to fulfil relationships and will seek others similarly who will share this dimension of their lives.

Online dating can also nurture those relationships that discuss ‘the good old days’ of owning the first microwaves or composing telegrams on an old rickety typewriter, rather than figuring out how to operate the texting facility on the latest mobile.

Some individuals are by their own personal configuration very flexible, adaptable & open minded and they too may find it more plausible to be in the company of individuals of different generations. Just as some individuals from the same generation may not be suited for matching due to personal configurations.  This part of matching needs to be addressed alongside personal attributes that will work well & easily with a partner.

Online dating can encourage men and women to take a nostalgic look back at what it was like to grow up during the sixties and recapture all aspects of life whether it is sharing those early television “Memories” from “The Way We Were”.

For those who grew up in the sixties, school life, ‘mod’ fashions and sixties pop music are still fresh in their minds.  A personal memory may be whilst chewing on fish fingers, peas and real potato peeled made chips watching Ron Ely reveal his hairless chest as the yoggling Tarzan or humming along to the original Batman theme tune ringing out from the wooden TV box placed in the corner of the room.  You can bet the generation just above also remembers.  Share it and reach out to those cross-generators that idolised The Rolling Stones, Elton John or fantasized marrying one of The Osmonds in the 1970′s.  A guaranteed laugh or two will be had.

So whether you are reminiscing about the original Sindy doll owned or debating as to who was the classiest James Bond, “Live & Let Die”. You are allowed to cross-generate.  Who knows, maybe confessing to dating as a baby boomer isn’t so bad after all!!

Investing in Barbie Dolls: Why So Popular?

There are many unique styles of dolls and practically as many types of connoisseurs, but there’s something wonderful about Barbie dolls. What is it about Barbie dolls that promote such intense dedication and appreciation from collectors? Collectors of both contemporary and traditional Barbie dolls cramm Internet Forums to explore their passion with other devoted collectors. Regardless if it’s tips on how to price a given doll, something about repair or perhaps to share the latest find, Barbie collectors are a devoted group. Upon reflection it’s easy to see that Barbie dolls fascinate collectors for a variety of reasons. Let’s have a look at the elements that seem to draw in many.

Going Classic With Barbie

Ladies from all backgrounds normally connect the toys of their youth with a more simple untroubled time in their lives, so buying Barbie dolls creates a nostalgia. Having played with Barbies in their younger days , women are especially attached to Barbie and there is certainly a connection between toys from childhood and subsequentlater collecting. With Barbie dolls, some collectors turn to the specific childhood dolls or the traditional Barbie, while some like assembling a group of the recent collectible Barbie dolls. Many collectors start by looking to buy a stand in for a precious childhood doll and eventually realize that the fascinationwith collecting Barbie as well as her accoutrements too strong. In some cases, many fans enjoy the adventure of tracking down classic Barbie dolls, doll clothing and accessories to get the traditional feel of the earlier Barbie dolls. Regardless if it’s a trip down memory lane or the elation of finding a period-specific Barbie, the nostalgia factor is a substantial part to the fascination of collecting Barbie.

Barbie is the Perfect Size

Ruth Handler, the mother of Barbie doll, developed a perfectly sized fashion doll that makes it it simple to collect. A properly sized doll for little girls, it’s lucky that the size and style of the Barbie doll is helpful for big girls too. The Barbie doll’s apparel and accents are tiny enough to be miniature, yet substantial enough so they can provide substantial detail. If by strategy or fortune, the scale of the Barbie doll greatly contributed to the popularity of the doll and even encouraged the development of sub-genres like designer Barbie clothes, including accessories. Certainly, the proportions of the Baribe doll itself is a large part of its popularity.

The Online World: Collecting Barbie is Simpler

When Barbie doll collecting met the online world, it started to be less complicated to research and collect Barbie. Changes in electronic communication and the launch of websites like e-Bay, Craigs List and more made seeking out Barbie dolls online easier. In addition, new collectors are able to find information to learn more about collecting Barbie and get the fundamentals of how to create a Barbie doll collection of which they can be proud. Furthermore, novices can use the internet to better grasp the valuation of Barbie dolls and avoid getting taken by less scrupulous sellers. Because of this, the world wide web has shown to be the great equalizer and has been a sizable factor why collecting Barbie is so prevalent.

A Big Barbie Collecting Community

Though facilitated by the web, the Barbie collector network is potent and self-sustaining. Whether it’s The Barbie Doll Collecting Forum on About.com, the Fashion Doll Guide Blog or another Barbie source, these groups generate increased interest and fun in collecting all things Barbie. Showing fresh discoveries, presenting a recently renovated vintage Barbie or talking about the latest collector Barbies are only a couple of activities that can be pursued. Barbie doll collector forums and websites can be busy, fun places where collectors can express their experiences, delight and passion for Barbie collecting which ultimately becomes quite contagious!

Advertising the Barbie Doll

Since the early days of the Barbie doll, Mattel has understood the strength behind advertising. For that reason, Barbie is amongst the most marketed doll ever and preserves an iconic spot in the realm of toys for girls. Other popular dolls just couldn’t contend in the early 1960s as soon as the Barbie television marketing began, and no other doll can compete today. Television marketing of the Barbie play dolls has been continual since the early 1960s; that’s over 40 years and Barbie advertisements are still going strong. Whether it’s loved or hated, advertising has made the Barbie doll what it is and has had a large impact on this timeless doll.

The Barbie doll is an iconic toy, still its popularity can’t be credited to only just one thing. Classic popularity, size, the internet, a collecting community and strong advertising have emerged to produce a doll that can fascinate almost anyone making Barbie the “it” doll of collecting.

Birthday Gifts for Girls

Birthday gifts are more liked by the girls rather than the birthday cards. Plan to bring the gift as per the choice and nature of the person for whom you wish to give. Here, are some gifts for the girls that you can try to give in the next birthday party.

If the girl is very small, then you can give a Barbie doll as the birthday gift. If you have the art of knitting or sewing, then you can also give a handmade Barbie doll. You can make such gifts even from the scrap materials.

For a grown-up girl who has an interest in sewing by her self, then the option of giving a sewing machine would be the best birthday gift. For an old aged lady, you can give the sewing machine with straight and zigzag stitch. For the middle age girl who is the beginner in using this machine, prefer to give her the sewing machine of little smaller size having the same functions. As you are giving to the beginner, also give a learning book of the sewing machine along with the birthday gift.

People believe that gifts related to sports can only be given to the boys. This is not true in today’s modern world. You can give the sports equipment as the birthday gift to the girls also depending on the interest of the person to whom you are gifting. Sometimes small girls enjoy playing with the set of t-ball or similar type of balls. It may happen that they get more interest in sports and choose it as a profession in future. Moreover, a child who likes to play sports right from the childhood can develop a healthy body.

These are some of the birthday gifts chosen for the girls. There can be many more varieties of gifts.

Vintage Barbie Swimsuit Pattern?

Does anyone know where to get a knit or other type of pattern for Barbie’s original 1959 zebra striped swimsuit? I used to have a page bookmarked with it, but it seems to have went offline. I’m looking for the pattern in doll and human sizes. Thanks.

I’ve been looking for this pattern for a minute now too. I think people used to sell it on ebay, though I haven’t seen it anywhere in a while. I would recommend trying to make the pattern yourself by looking at images of the suit or looking at it in person if you’re lucky enough to have one (I have the repro from 93′). If I am able to recreate the pattern, I’ll be sure to share it on my site. I have been sewing Barbie clothes for around 7 years now. Basic sewing knowledge would be use full either way, so i’d suggest brushing up on your running stitches if you don’t sew regularly. Knitting the suit seems that it would be a basic project, it seems to be only one piece with only 4 points of machine stitching for shaping and to hold it together in the back and at the bottom. I however, am no knitter.

Good luck doll!

Barbie the world’s famous doll in the fashion toy world!

Have you dream of owning about forty pets including cats and dogs, horses and others? Or you want to have a wide range of vehicles, including convertibles, trailers and jeeps? Or maybe you like to have a career life as a flight attendant or having to own the commercial airline instead? Well, I knew someone who really able to have those. Excited to meet her? Meet Barbie®: the world’s famous doll in the fashion toy world!

Barbie have become the star of the fashion world of dolls for almost 50 years since Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie gave her debut. But how did Barbie have managed her career as the world’s most popular doll?
You might think that you are too old to know about Barbie®, but Barbie®, had become part of every woman’s life since her debut in in 1959, and like any living Artists or Stars, any issues and gossips about her would surely intrigue anyone.

Who is Barbie® anyway?

Barbie’s whole name is is Barbara Millicent Roberts. In the 1960s, her parents’ names are given as George and Margaret Roberts from the fictional town of Willows, Wisconsin. Barbie attended Willows High School and Manhattan International High School in New York City, based on the real-life Stuyvesant High School. She has romantic relationship with her man Ken (Ken Carson), who first appeared in 1961.

The Fame

Uniquely, not only the movie stars and politicians who can be a cultural icon. Almost unambiguously for a toy fashion doll, Barbie has become a cultural icon and has been given honors that are rare in the toy world. In 1974 a section of Times Square in New York City was renamed Barbie Boulevard for a week, while in 1985 the artist Andy Warhol created a painting of Barbie.

Almost 50 years of giving happiness to kids!

Not only Barbie has been popular among kids because of her long hair and fashionista life, but Barbie have also a series of product lines for her avid fans. From notebooks, pencils, bags, t-shirts and shoes, you can show how you love Barbie by having one of these. Mattel even released a collector’s edition, for those who have been young ones and continue to love Barbie, in the late years.
Recently, Barbie faced an ultimate trial of her life when MGA Entertainment launched the Bratz range of dolls in 2001, an act that would give Barbie her first serious rivalry in the fashion doll market. The 2004 sales figures implies that Barbie and the Bratz are having a stiff competition in winning the hearts of girls in the world.

The continuous struggle

The creation of Barbie by Mattels have become part of the living tradition such that you can make a genuine smile from an innocent child of having to own a Barbie® doll. And despite heavy competition and court struggles ( Mattels is suing MGA Entertainment of Bratz for copyright infringement), Barbie will continue to win the hearts of every girl not only in the United Kingdom but the world.

Pussycat Dolls: Nicole’s Third Single Picked by Fans

It seems that Nicole Scherzinger has a lot in her hands now even though her solo album’s release has been pushed back too many times. In fact, the next season of Pussycat Dolls Present might as well come back to our TV screens before she gets to release her album, which was supposed to be released on September 25, 2007. But then it was postponed for October, then November, and now Nicole website says that it’s just “Coming Soon.”

Last month, a quite frustrated Nicole blogged about her work on making the album, saying “I’ve been working on this album non stop for two years now…dang, I can’t believe it’s been that long…but as the old saying goes, good things come with time. I wanted to make sure coming out my first time as a solo artist, that the music would represent me, Nicole, individually…IN THE END, I KNOW THE WORK, PASSION AND LOVE PUT INTO MAKING THIS ALBUM WILL SPEAK FOR ITSELF. I just wait for the day to share it with all of you…and that day is a comin!”

Meanwhile, Nicole Scherzinger gave the fans a chance to become part of the decision making process on the next single for the album. Fans voted and a song was indeed chosen, one that may be familiar to Pussycat Dolls Present fans who’ve been tuning in to the CW lately.

“Puakenikeni” is the title of the song selected by the fans and it was featured in the fall promos for the CW Network. However, in the promos, the song had different lyrics and was titled “Get Into It,” but was still sung by Nicole herself. The promos also highlighted the new seasons of shows America ’s Next Top Model, Beauty and the Geek and Pussycat Dolls Present.

Produced by Akon, “Puakenikeni” was released on December 18, and was met with mixed reviews, much like her previous singles, “Whatever U Like” and “Baby Love.” The song’s title refers to the Hawaiian flower, the Yellow Hibiscus.

In more Pussycat Dolls news, the girls have alluded to a potential 2008 album release for the group, so fans must be excited to hear that Nicole and the rest of the Dolls will be busy this new year.

Her stately black dress, elegant white pearls and flawlessly coordinated black pumps convey her unrivaled sense of chic sophistication and timeless style. This first lady portrait captures Obama just as she is, radiant and powerful.

This hand painted porcelain doll wears a satin gown covered in hand-applied crystals, a long, flowing gown and a shimmering gold tiara. Natalia elegantly holds a lush spring bouquet of lilies of the valley in her tiny hands.

For a slightly more modern addition to your collection, take a look at the Princess Diana Vinyl Portrait doll. The picture of elegance and poise, Diana is depicted in a form-fitting blue gown covered in hand-applied beads. Her sprightly, short hair conveys her fun-loving spirit while showcasing her long, elegant neckline and delicate features.

Madame Alexander Dolls

For doll collectors who appreciate a slightly more artistic rendition of the figures they love, the Madame Alexander collection is perfect. Madame Alexander Holly Golightly, for example, captures a playfully childlike version of Audrey Hebpurn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The unmistakably adorable doll wears an elegant black dress, long opera gloves, sling-back and her signature pearl accessories. And of course, Holly’s beloved cat perches lovingly on her shoulder.

Madame Alexander Cool Sandy Cissette is a must for doll collectors that love the movie “Grease.” In this endearing, artfully crafted rendition, Sandy proudly wears her leather biker jacket, form fitting black bodysuit, and sassy red shoes. The doll is complete with bold earrings, striking blue eyes and a lifelike head full of flowing blond curls.

Plucked right from another iconic American film, the Madame Alexander Wicked Witch of the West doll is sure to be a welcome addition to your collection. Complete with greed skin, black hair and a black taffeta dress and black satin cape, this bewitching rendition represents one of the most beloved eras of cinema and is a lovely contrast to sweeter-looking figures in your doll collection.

As every collector knows, dolls are more than just children’s toys. These expressive art forms can connect us to meaningful film characters and important political and cultural figures. If you’re looking for the next doll to round out your collection, explore these beautiful dolls today.

Barbie Doll, a Fashionable Legend

The gaudy of Barbie Doll’s 50 year old is being held with many great fashion designers giving gifts. Speaking of her shoes, I thing she loves elegant pumps best. She has own million pair of pumps; I am afraid that nobody can match with her in the world. When Barbie, the muses in designers’ eyes, choose her next pair of beautiful pumps, a super famous women’s shoes designer is absolutely necessary. This year, a Frenchman Christian Louboutin was choosed by her.

Christian Louboutin, an outstanding women’s shoe designer, is famous for the splash of red on the sole of shoes designed by him. There is no doubt that the splash of red is every super fans of pumps favorite. Talking about the French old man Louboutin,he thinks that women’s beautiful legs can not lack of a pair of suitable and beautiful pumps. In 1991, Louboutin released his first series of high heels. These pumps were all 12cm or more high. Louboutin’s purpose is very interesting;”I hope that women who wear pumps designed by me look more sexy, more beautiful, and their legs look as long as possible.”he said. It seems that Christian Louboutin like women’s beautiful legs naturally. Surely, his interesting makes him giving so many sexy moments to women.

Now, we know Louboutin’s design ideas, it’s easy to understand that why he was willing to design lovely and pretty high heels for Barbie and hold the post of Barbie’s fashionable godfather for one year. However, Christian Louboutin’s work is not restricted to rebuild Barbie’s wardrobe; his real focus of work is giving some necessary art direction to Barbie’s colorful life.

Barbie’s boss Mattel has begun cooperation with Christian Louboutin in the beginning of this year. During NewYork Fashion Week in February, on the Barbie reality shows for her 50 year old celebration, models were wearing pink red-sole Christian Louboutin pumps which are designed exclusively for Barbie. Next, Christian Louboutin will design accessories for Barbie and direct to the market. In addition, a dairy《The year in Paris with Christian Louboutin》which is about Louboutin’s favorites and photos about Barbie and him will be released at the same time.

Asking about the cooperation, Stephanie Cota, Mettel’s SVP who is responsible for the company’s market expending, say that the cooperation is reasonable; that’s not only because of Barbie’s fashionable tradition, but also because her especial favorites to high heels. As she needs many high heels, so we should design a unique series of pumps for her.

We have seen the real image of the pair of pink high heels designed for Barbie. The designer said, “She needs a pair of great shoes, a pair of high thin heels. The stilettos’ curve often intoxicates me. And stilettos fit for Barbie’s perfect body.”

The three customized Barbie are packaged with Christian Louboutin shoebox, and be served four pair of Christian Louboutin pumps. Even more interesting is that a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes which designed for Barbie walking on the carpet.

It seems that Barbie will continue her fashionable legend. Our appearances must have looked faded when she is 100 year old, and she is still beautiful and brilliant.

Summer in Queenstown, New Zealand

Queenstown, New Zealand is well known as a top winter destination due to it’s proximity to several excellent ski fields. However it also makes an excellent stop for a few days during a summer tour of New Zealand’s South Island.

Queenstown sits on the edge of beautiful Lake Wakatipu, surrounded by picturesque mountains that are often capped with snow. The town has good shopping and also makes a great adventure playground, where you can go hiking, jet boating, bungy jumping, white water rafting and what ever else your adventurous appetite can handle.

On my tour of the South Island we spent three days in Queenstown, and camped in our campervan right next to the lake.

Ski resorts
Although there is no snow to ski on during the summer, the chair lifts at the ski resorts still operate and you can get some amazing views from Coronet Peak and The Remarkables, which is well worth checking out.

Arrowtown
Arrowtown is a historic old gold mining town, located about 20 minutes drive from Queenstown. Sitting on the Arrow River which was rich in gold in the 1800′s, the town’s historic buildings are well preserved and walking it’s streets has a real old feel to it. There are also plenty of interesting shops and cafes to check out.

Jet boating
A visit to Queenstown should always include a jet boat ride! Flying across the water at incredible speeds while doing 360 degree spins is great fun. There are a lot of jet boating companies at a lot of different locations in Queenstown, but I found the best (and most daring) to be the Shotover Jet on the Shotover River. The jet boat speeds through the narrow Shotover gorge doing 360 degree spins where you think that you will smash into the sides of the gorge. It’s very exhilarating and I highly recommend the experience.

Steam boating
If jet boating isn’t your thing, or you just want a slower change of pace from all of the extreme sports that you have been participating in, then a steam boat cruise on Lake Wakatipu is perfect. The TSS Earnslaw is a vintage steam boat that does daily cruises on Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak High Country farm, where you can take a guided tour to see how a New Zealand sheep farm operates. They also offer evening dinner cruises, however I only did the day cruise to the farm which was nice and relaxing.

Skipper’s Canyon
Skipper’s Canyon Road is one of the most dangerous roads in New Zealand, and in fact hire cars are not insured if you drive on the road. Following along the Shotover River, the road is cut into the cliff side of the gorge, and at some points is 100m above the river. Taking a tour along the road is a great experience and the gorge is very beautiful. I found it incredible how the people had to cut the road by hand, all to gain access to the gold deposits in the river. Some scenes from “The Lord of the Rings” were also filmed in the canyon. Who knows how they got down there!

I could have easily spent a couple of weeks in Queenstown and would have never been bored. Anytime of the year is a great time to visit Queenstown.

What are some names of teen barbie dolls like Skipper?

My sister wanted skipper for her birthday, but when I do a search, all I can find is vintage ones. Are there other ones like Skipper that are still made?
Sorry, I am not trying to find a vintage doll. I am trying to find a doll that is made today.

Skipper is no longer in production. You can sometimes find Teen Skipper & her friends on ebay. These dolls were produced in the 1990′s.

Depending on her age, she might like the Top Model dolls or the Fashion Fever dolls. Both are lines by Mattel. The Fashion Fever dolls tend to appeal to younger girls.

Tips to Buy and Sell Barbie Dolls Online

Tips to buy and sell Barbie Dolls online

It is not unnatural that the online sellers repent for not saving their Barbie Dolls when they come to know the big bucks behind pretty doll business.

Barbie, the doll which has been attracting the worldwide kids and elders since 1959, is available for wide range of prices from $5 to $5,000.

One has to know the nuances of doll business to buy or sell Barbies online. For example, just handful of profit you can see if you put up a classic Bubble-cut Barbie for sale at low opening bid with no reserve.

Web reference

Thanks to Internet, one can get lot of information, pictures, quotes and suggestions on doll collection through browsing hundreds of websites. However, three websites are worth watching for latest updates and vast information of Barbie dolls.

Doll Reference (http://www.dollreference.com/) is the best place to start off. This is a large, doll-collecting site, and the Barbie Menu is provided separately to find vintage Barbie & Friends of 1959 – 1976. There are more than 156 pages and nearly 2 thousand pictures in this section.

Official site for Mattel’s Barbie Dolls, Barbie Collectibles, (http://www.barbiecollectibles.com) cannot be ignored for your comprehensive information on Barbie Dolls business. From 1959 till today, it presents both classic and modern collection of Barbie Dolls and friends. Barbie fashions, newsletter to the members and space for showcasing member’s collection are the additional advantages of this website.

To get acquainted with the business lingo of Barbie Dolls, “Barbie Collecting Terminology” (http://www.dollectibles.com/terminology.htm) is a must watch. The website rolls out all kinds of letters/characters, abbreviations related to the title and their detailed information.

Tips to identify your Barbie

Markings encrypted on backside and back of the neck indicate the product details, in the absence of pictures. The condition of doll affects the cost like all other collectibles. Clothing, paint, torso, face and the condition of hair help you in determining the price. For a seller, it is important to know the advantages and disadvantage of these features. It is advisable that a buyer should ascertain the above, by sending an email or calling the seller if they are not found in the specifications.

It is a sad fact of life that some people are dishonest, others forgetful, and others misinformed about dolls. Just like in a real life transaction at a doll show or shop, you need to protect yourself from being “taken” by the less-than scrupulous when you buy or sell dolls on the Internet at such online auction houses like eBay or Amazon.com, or in person-to-person direct sales from web sites. Unlike real life, when you purchase a doll online, you can’t inspect it yourself. As a seller, your biggest fears are someone not paying you after the doll is sent, or someone returning a doll to you that is in worse condition than when you sent it. As a buyer, your biggest fear is getting NO doll at all after you have paid for it, or a doll that is in much worse condition than described. Here are some things you can do to help protect yourself in online transactions, as both a buyer and a seller:

BUYING:

1. Get REFERENCES: If you are dealing with an unknown person or entity, find out the names of other people who have had successful online transactions with the seller, and CONTACT THEM, via e-mail or phone.

2. Send a CHECK, and not a money order, whenever possible (this is the reverse of what you would prefer as a seller). You can stop a check, but there is little you can do about a money order if things go bad in the middle of a deal.

3. Get EXTENSIVE DESCRIPTIONS. Ask questions if the initial description is not detailed enough, and make sure you receive answers. If you sense resistance, or receive evasiveness or vague answers, PASS.

4. Get PICTURES whenever possible. If the seller is not equipped to send them via e-mail, then request them via snail mail (computer-speak for US Postal Service).

5. Get a RETURN PRIVILEGE; You WILL get dolls that are over-optimistically described, and you WILL use this privilege if you buy many dolls online.

6. Use COMMON SENSE: If something feels “off” about the doll, the seller, or the transaction, or you just get a bad feeling, LISTEN to your inner self, and pass on the doll. It isn’t worth taking a chance, and your inner warning system is usually reliable. The few times I have been “burnt” on a doll, if I had paid attention to my misgivings, I wouldn’t have been!

7. Don’t be RUSHED: If the seller is in an undue rush (desperate for money; family emergency, raising cash), your warning system should go off. Another doll will come along; PASS

8. Get a PHONE NUMBER and an ADDRESS. Don’t rely on an e-mail address and a post-office box; both can be ignored or disappear. Call the phone number.

9. KEEP CORRESPONDENCE: Keep all computerized correspondence until the doll is delivered, in case there is a dispute.

10. Do NOT Take Part In A THIRD PARTY Transaction: Don’t buy a doll from x who is either selling or shipping it for y. This is a recipe for disaster; you can get caught in the middle of a dispute between the two parties. This has happened to me; a lady went on a long vacation, left a doll with a friend to ship when my $$ were received. They had a dispute over postage and shipping costs (and, she stiffed her friend on the electricity bill). I had to pay postage and handling on the doll AGAIN (my cheapest option to get out of this), while the two parties continued to argue and I didn’t get my doll for nearly a month!

11. Does The Transaction Sound Too Good To Be True? Is someone offering you a perfect Jumeau for $500? RUN, quickly, in the opposite computerized direction.

12. Don’t Buy Dolls that are TOO EXPENSIVE Online: Set a limit that won’t be TOO painful if all of your precautions are of no use, and you get stuck with the dog doll of the century, or, even worse, no doll at all after payment. Remember, only YOU know what is too big a risk for you to take–for one person, it might be $50. For another, $5,000.

13. SHIPPING INSURANCE: It is a good idea to have this, in case your doll is lost or damaged in transit.

SELLING:

1. Get REFERENCES. Does the buyer pay their bills? Get e-mail and phone references from online transactions to make sure.

2. MONEY ORDERS AND CHECK CLEARANCE: When you sell, money orders are best for YOU. Money Orders are best. If you accept checks, make 100% sure it has cleared your bank before you ship the doll.

.3 Get a PHONE NUMBER and ACTUAL ADDRESS. Don’t rely on an e-mail address and post office box or a PMB. Call the phone number.

4. DISCLOSE ALL FLAWS: As mentioned above. Be 100% honest, or you will end up with unsuccessful transactions and returns!

5. Have POLICIES ON PAYMENT: Also as mentioned above, and stick to them

6. Offer a RETURN POLICY–I offer return for anything that is NOT as described (purchaser finds a flaw I didn’t describe, etc.) and a more liberal policy if asked for it up front.

7. Keep CORRESPONDENCE, DOCUMENTATION AND PICTURES: Since you DO offer a return policy, you need to protect yourself against the unscrupulous buyer who may return to you a DIFFERENT doll of the same type, which is in worse condition than yours (this is not very common, but could happen). I know one lady who sent out a mint #6 vintage Barbie, and what was returned to her was a very played with #6 Barbie. At least until the transaction is successfully completed, keep everything in case of a dispute.

8. Make The Buyer Purchase SHIPPING INSURANCE. It will help you have peace of mind, in case the box doesn’t arrive. Also, it gives you proof of successful delivery.

9. Ship PROMPTLY, and let your customer know when to expect shipment. If you are going on a one week vacation, and can’t ship that week, let your buyers know in ADVANCE so they don’t get nervous when their e-mails to you aren’t answered.

10. UPS VS. US MAIL?: This is a personal choice; I have had good luck with Priority Mail, Insured. My UPS packages are often received more mangled than my post office ones, because UPS ships so many heavy packages. BUT, UPS has a marvelous tracking service; you can track a package with your computer. So, for my very expensive or large dolls, I DO use UPS. Both services offer return receipts for a fee, and for expensive dolls, I would purchase this extra peace of mind.

11. PACK the doll well. You DO NOT want to have an expensive doll ruined in transit. You will have a headache to deal with, a ruined sale, and an unhappy customer.

I hope these tips are helpful; in future articles, we will cover buying and selling dolls via eBay and other online auctons, as well as buying and selling dolls via other methods on the Internet.
