Barbie Dolls–history of the Most Popular Doll Ever

In 1959 the first Barbie doll was shown at the New York toy fair. Billed as “New For ’59,The Barbie Doll:A Shapely Teenage Fashion Model Price $3.00.” Thus was born the Barbie doll phenomenon which is certainly one of the greatest success stories in toy manufacturing. Prior to Barbie nearly all children’s dolls were child dolls rather than adult figures. Barbie changed all this.

In 1945 Elliot and Ruth Handler formed a partnership with Harold Matson to manufacture picture frames. The two names Matson and Elliot were combined to form the company name Mattel. Elliot used the picture frame wood scrap to make doll house furniture. This was the start of the Handler furniture business.

About this time Ruth noticed that her daughter Barbara and friends preferred to play with adult paper dolls rather than child or baby dolls. The girls preferred a doll which could be their role model when they grew up. Ruth realised that there could be big commercial possibilities in the adult doll market. She discussed the idea with her husband but he felt that it would be too expensive to start making the dolls.

Soon after this Ruth made a trip to Germany and purchased a doll called Lilli. This adult type doll was based on a German comic strip. On returning to the USA she began work to redesign the doll working with a doll clothes designer. The barbie doll was the result and it was named after Ruth’s daughter Barbara. The doll was patented by Mattel in 1958 and introduced in 1959. She was to become one of the most well known and well loved toys ever made.

Barbie soon became a collectors doll and was avidly sought after by adult collectors. From 1959 to 1972 the Barbie doll had seven distinct changes in her appearance and design. These Barbies made up to 1972 are recognised as vintage collectible dolls by their fans and are eagerly sought after. The 1959 Barbie doll in mint condition will sell for thousands of dollars. Some have sold for as much as $8000 to $10,000 but you can buy them for much less and $2000 to $3000 is quite common. Later editions fetch proportionately less. Dolls made in the 1969 to 1972 period can often be bought for a few dollars. Garage sales and flea markets are still the source of a few early dolls. About 300,000 of the 1959 Barbie were made and there are undoubtedly many out there still undiscovered.

I have many nude Mattel Barbie dolls that I would like to get images and descriptions for. What site on the Internet would you recommend? I have some vintage but mostly TNTs. I also have a couple of Mackie mouths.

Actually, your best bet may be to take them into a doll shop (not a toy shop, but a store that specializes in vintage/antique dolls). These are usually run by very knowledgable people, and if they don’t know the answer, they may be able to find you someone who can.

Top Ten Theme Parties for Girls

All-girl parties are fun to plan as girls generally demand less organized activity and are more prepared to just “play” and be creative if the ideas and materials are provided. Another very popular birthday party idea for girls is where they all become little chefs and cook everything themselves from pizza to cookies.  The complexity of the recipes – and the cleanup – depends on the age of the girls but turning your home into an Italian trattoria for the afternoon could be sensational.  The more preparation you do the better and Italian music, tourist posters on the walls, and tiramisu for dessert would make for a party even the parents could enjoy.  And that could be an unexpected bonus after all your hard work and planning!

The Birth of Barbie’s Ken: Living in the Shadows

No comprehension of the Barbie doll is perfect without considering her boyfriend Ken, who has experienced some transitions himself throughout the years. Regarded a collectible in his own right, let’s take a brief look at a collector’s early chronology of the Ken doll (1960s – 1970s).

Born for a Lonely Barbie Doll

The Ken Doll came to life in 1961 as Barbie Dolls companion and he was an immediate hit as Barbie enthusiasts needed her to get a companion. The first Ken Doll had flocked hair in either blonde or brunette, blue eyes and he was 12 inches tall. Ken came with red swimming trunks, slide sandals together with a yellow beach towel. Eventually his hair became thin and fell out, so finding an original Ken doll with a full head of hair is a real victory. In the years immediately following Ken’s first release, the Ken doll was created with molded hair (blonde or brown), and came with a collectible wardrobe of clothes that would carry him thru many years. Through 1964, minor enhancements were made such as the release of a special limited edition of King Arthur.

The Mid 60s: Ken Goes Through Changes

After Ken’s first years, the Ken doll saw significant alterations. 1965 would be a watershed year for Ken; Bendable Leg Ken was a great enhancement for the Ken doll which made him far more realistic. Up until that point, life-like play with Ken and Barbie dolls was very stiff and the improvements made in the mobility and bendability of dolls during the time really increased the dolls’ popularity. Regrettably, Ken’s entrance into the Mod era didn’t start well; 1966 saw Ken being discontinued but later returned in 1968 as the Talking Ken Doll and in 1969 as Talking Ken. Talking Ken appeared with a entirely new, adult look with a muscular build and fashionable wardrobe. Obviously, his original wardrobe didn’t fit “man-Ken,” much to the dismay of collectors.

Ken Gets Groovy in the 70s

The 1970s introduced major changes to Ken that incorporated clothing, features and look. Mirroring the big cultural and stylistic changes of the day, 1971′s Action Ken Doll entered the Barbie doll scene wearing a groovy gold, psychedelic shirt with vest. Even though he still had molded brown hair, Ken unquestionably stood out in the crowd! That year, Malibu Ken was released and subsequent years saw big adjustments to fashion and functionality like real rooted hair (1973′s Mod Hair Ken). The late 70′s introduced a totally fresh look driven by the disco fashions of the day with the introduction of Superstar Ken showcasing a new face, body and wardrobe.

The Ken Doll: Barbie’s Perfect Boyfriend

Just like the Barbie doll, the creation of the Ken doll has advanced in phases; beginning simply as a young friend for his girlfriend Barbie and then evolving into more of a manifestation of the “perfect boyfriend.” Through Ken’s early development, the influence of pop culture can be seen with the dramatic stylistic modifications echoing the signs and styles of the times. Subsequently, the Ken doll is now a popular collectible in his own right and has won the sympathy of many who view him as the adoring boyfriend who is overshadowed by the beauty, personality and ambitions of his girlfriend Barbie.

Barbie and Ken (also known as Ken Carson) are two lovers Mattel toy doll introduced in the early sixties as the fictional boyfriend/girlfriend. Similar to his female counterpart, Ken had a fashionable line of clothing and accessories. In the Barbie tales, Ken and Barbie met on the set of a TV commercial in 1961. Since his debut, Ken has held at least forty occupations, from Olympic gold medalist to hair stylist in a span of four decades.

The unrealistic physiques of these two caused comment in the past years. Yale University psychologist, Kelly Brownell, observed that to match up to what Barbie looks for in a mate, a man would have to grow 20 inches taller and add nearly 8 inches to his neck circumference, 11 inches to his chest and 10 inches to his waist to resemble the muscular Ken.

In February, 2004, the doll company Mattel announced a split for Barbie and Ken, with its vice president of marketing Russell Arons, saying that Barbie and Ken felt it’s time to for them to spend some quality time apart, Like many other celebrity couples, their Hollywood romance. He also hinted that the separation might be partially due to Ken’s reluctance to getting married to Barbie. In February, 2006 however, a revamped version of the Ken doll was launched, and it appeared that their relationship was official again.

These characters are named after the names of the children of its designer Ruth Handler. Early this year the media reported on the publication of a book entitled Toy Monster: The Big, Bad World of Mattel by Jerry Oppenheimer. In the book, Oppenheimer claims that Ken Handler “grew up embarrassed and humiliated by having an anatomically incorrect boy doll named after him with no hint.

The Need for an Extra Room for Your Toys

The world as we know it is really messed up. Mattel and Fisher Price, the very people who brought us Tickle-Me-Elmo as the toy of the season last Christmas, have allowed some of America’s babies to play with and put in their little mouths, toys painted with lead paint. I do accept the explanation that their executives set guidelines for the factory owners in China. Part of the directive was don’t use lead paint, however someone should have followed up on that. This is not a case of putting the wrong labels on clothing and not having it fit the American baby. This is an extreme danger to the little toddlers. How ironic that parents are buying educational toys – that may cause brain damage if – change that to when – they put them in their mouths. It will be some time before the company regains the trust of the American public.

On the positive side, Fisher Price/Mattel has brought us that amazing Tickle-Me-Elmo. He can laugh, kick his feet in the air after falling on his back. He can then roll over and stand up all by himself. He even does a somersault. All this with one arm attached to his body. Did I mention that he can talk. I cannot praise him enough for his comedic value.

Back to the negative. That Barbie is still a sexy little thing for the three to seven year old set. Sure her hair is beautiful and I believe she dumped Ken last year, but she still has her feet permanently ready to slip in to high heels. She has definitely raised her aspirations from wanting to settle down in her townhouse with Ken and drive around in her convertible with her hair flowing behind her. Barbie has evolved into a modern girl. You will find her on the shelf at your favorite store wearing her white lab coat as she cares for animals in her Veterinarian persona. She has appeared as a teacher, on horseback, as a gymnast, a ballet dancer as well as modeling her annual Christmas outfit. You can buy her dressed in costumes representing countries around the world. Barbie loves Tickle-Me-Elmo as much as the kids do. She comes packaged with a little copy of him. She wears a picture of him on her shirt and carries a purse with him peeking from the front of it and his face is on her belt buckle. He giggles when you press his tummy just as the big acrobatic one does. The only warning on the box says “WARNING May Cause Uncontrollable Laughter.” I hope that indicates we don’t have to worry about lead paint on this toy.

Let’s create a fictitious little girl about six years old. For fun we’ll name her Ruby Doo. She loves her Elmos (and I say Elmos since there is the first Elmo from ten years ago, the Chicken Dance Elmo, the Hokey Pokey Elmo who sits next to the Elmo who simply is stuffed and soft and looks cute. He must be named old-fashioned Elmo. She lines them up and plays with one every now and then.

This week though it is her Barbie doll house and little sister Chrissy who keep her busy. I’m not sure which companies make all the craft toys but they are wonderful and she loves making things with them. But the latest advance that has mothers sighing with relief is the finger painting book which sells with paint that won’t show up except on the paper it was intended to show up on. I think it is made by Crayola. I don’t know how she or he did it but the employee who invented this deserves a big raise. does dc have a japan town that sells kawaii things like cute bento boxes squishy donuts plushies etc. i know they have a china town but do they sell the things like the new york chinatown??

DC is not know for having much of a selection of anime items. There are a handful of small stores in and around DC, but I have never found anything interesting at them they, they are not close to each other, and they all seem to charge an arm and a leg relative to what you can find the stuff online for. Most of the Anime stores I have been to with a good selection were on the west coast. One thing DC area does have a fair number of is Anime conventions. Although most of them are not in DC proper there are some ones that are not far away for example Katsucon , anime USA, otakon, anime mid atlantic ect… The biggest ones in the area are Otakon and Katsucon. Baltimore comic con is also coming up I think this weekend, but that is more comic book focused.

Barbie games have had a 49 year history full of ups and downs, but Barbie has managed to always stay on top.
A Barbie History
A long-time favorite of girls young and old, Barbie has a life full of ups and down. Social revolutions and political changes can all be seen in Barbie games through the years and in many cases, the social history of major nations can be charted through changes in a simple plastic doll.
Barbie Meets the World
Barbara Millicent Roberts was introduced to the world on March 9, 1959. In a series of books released soon after her initial debut, Barbie’s parents were named as George and Margaret Roberts from Willows, Wisconsin, but in reality, Barbie was the brain child of one devoted mother who just happened to have sway with a major toy company, Mattel.
In the mid 1950s, Ruth Handler watched her daughter play with paper dolls and was entertained to see her give dolls adult roles and personalities. As almost all dolls at the time were infants, Ruth was troubled that she wasn’t able to give her daughter adult styled dolls to play with. Ruth approached her husband, who happened to be a cofounder of Mattel, about her concern and ideas for creating an adult doll, but the idea was dismissed. It wasn’t until after finding a similar doll manufactured for adults in Germany based on a popular German comic book that she found the answer.
Ruth used the doll as a basis for her own creation and soon, Barbie dolls were ready to meet the world. And the young woman was welcomed with open arms, despite some concerns over her proportions and distinctive anatomy.
Barbie Games through the Years
Barbie was introduced to the world with unrealistic proportions, a striped swimsuit and a sweetly demur expression on her face. In 2008, she is a more naturally shaped woman with multiple high-powered careers, an extensive wardrobe and her own fleet of homes and vehicles. Barbie has been through a lot in the last 49 years, and that extensive history has helped her remain a cultural legend popular with adult collectors and little girls alike.
According to Mattel, who still manufactures Barbie games and products, three Barbie dolls are sold every second across the globe. Barbie is famous the world over and has looks and styles suitable for hundreds of cultures. Although some cultures and companies, particularly those in the Middle East, still feel Barbie doesn’t meet their religious guidelines, many others recognize Barbie as a rite of passage for many young girls.

Today, Barbie isn’t just on the pink aisle at the toy store. She’s on wrapping paper, lunch boxes, and now she’s also online. Barbie games are popular with the same demographic who collect her latest outfits and dream of Barbie dream houses. In fact, many of the girls who enjoy playing online Barbie games have left traditional Barbies behind, but still greatly enjoy dressing online doll versions of Barbie in her unlimited outfits and accessories.

For Barbie fans, the state of affairs between Barbie and Ken leaves cause for concern. Together for 43 years, the famous couple called it quits in 2004. Many long-time devotees to Barbie games were shocked when the long-term couple split, but others claim to have seen the end coming well before it arrived. Apart now for four years, there are rumors that Barbie and Ken have been spotted together more frequently. These are lending fuel to gossip that the pair might be seeking reconciliation.
The two plastic celebrities met on the set of a television commercial in 1961, and have been together ever since. Despite many well publicized balls, parties, and special occasions, the pair never married and finally reached a point where they needed a bit of distance from each other. There were rumors at the time of the break-up that both parties were seeking attention from newer dolls, but no new relationships ever came from that gossip.
The New Ken
In 2004, Ken left Barbie amicably seeking a new single life. In 2006, he returned more muscular and attractive than ever. While nothing is sure regarding the two years he was out of the spotlight, it’s obvious at least some of his time was used to develop a new physique and a new style.
When Ken came back into Barbie’s social arena, he was immediately in competition with other fit, attractive types, and Barbie stayed cool. Or at least she appeared to at the time. She complimented his new look through her publicist, but didn’t seem to return his renewed affections. In 2007, however, Barbie made a few changes in her life. She developed a fitter, more natural look and took on some of the latest styles. She changed careers (again) and made new friends. And most importantly, the small changes she’s made seem to have brought Barbie back into the dating game.
The New Barbie
When a woman feels good about herself, her self esteem ratchets up and so does her general state of productivity and happiness. Barbie looks good and feels great, and the men in her life – including Ken – are definitely taking notice.
Over the last year, Barbie and Ken have been seen leaving stores together and appearing together in television spots. The pair was thought to have reconciled in 2006, but all evidence now shows that the two might indeed be reaching a new level of commitment in their relationship in 2008.
The New Relationship
Barbie is a new woman, proud of her figure and her accomplishments. On her own for the first time in four decades, she showed the world that a woman can survive and most definitely thrive on her own. Being apart gave both Barbie and Ken a golden opportunity to redefine themselves and seek new beginnings. And now that they have new outlooks on life, they also seem to have a very positive outlook on their future together. We wish them the best of luck.

Greenpeace’s successful campaign to get the toy company to change its
packaging has lessons for future plans to target large companies to improve
their behavior: Amp up the humor and go viral.

Sometimes it takes humor to make a serious point. That seems to be the lesson
from Greenpeace’s “Barbie, It’s Over” campaign–which recently resulted in
Mattel overturning how it packages its products, including its famous Barbie
and Ken dolls.

This summer, Greenpeace created a video showing Ken dumping Barbie (“I don’t
date girls who are into deforestation”), a mock Twitter feud, photos of Barbie
chainsawing logs, and a huge banner on the wall of Mattel’s L.A. headquarters.
It was hoping to draw attention to the toy industry’s use of paper from the
Indonesian rainforest in its packaging, and it succeeded. The video, photos,
and tweets went viral, leading 500,000 people to send emails to Mattel in
protest, and the media to report the story extensively.
