KY Kernel: Just Dance 3 review (n4g)
I have a confession to make. I cant dance at all! I cant even remotely form
the movements that one could constitute as dancing. Thanks to Ubisofts Just
Dance 3 I can once again confirm that I have no jive. I had a hell of a good
time trying to dance though. Just Dance 3 is the latest game in Ubisofts
wildly popular dancing series that attempts to make dancers out of everybody.
In reality, youre going to be swinging your body around like an epileptic rag
doll attempting to replicate the moves shown before you.

Roots of John Fogerty
In a way, Creedence Clearwater Revival was lucky. Based in the terminally unhip East Bay suburb of El Cerrito, looking to classic rock & roll and the Beatles for inspiration in their early incarnation as the Golliwogs instead of the folk-rock which powered the San Francisco scene’s big-name bands, they were shunned by the psychedelic ballrooms and had lots of time to refine a sound that was completely their own. The result was a run of nine Top Ten singles (and one, “Suzie Q,” which peaked at number 11) of a directness and simplicity that the other bands missed. For this, they were derided by the hipoisie, who seem to have forgotten that popular music was supposed to be, um, popular.
Certainly their songwriting powerhouse, John Fogerty, didn’t mind at all. He was too busy crafting powerful songs that the country reacted to immediately, honing songwriting, singing, and guitar skills that turned Creedence into one of America’s top bands. After they broke up, Fogerty continued to pursue his vision, adding a dash of country music which only broadened his appeal, although legal issues and changing tastes meant that his sales might not have reflected his mastery as they once might have.
Creedence’s songs played on a mythology which had already been set in place by the performers whose music they covered and whose legacy they extended. Proud Mary steamed up the Mississippi River, Fogerty sang about being born on the bayou (which he clearly wasn’t), and characterized the band as Willie and the Poor Boys, just pickin’ and grinnin’ for spare change. This made the band something of a pop Rorschach test, in which listeners saw an image far more democratic and working-class than the band actually was. The deceptive simplicity of Creedence’s music, too, was in stark contrast to the increasingly virtuosic-for-its-own-sake music coming from across San Francisco Bay, and the flannel-shirted, jeans-wearing image the band projected in photos and on stage was the opposite of the rock star poses adopted by so many of their contemporaries.
This democratic impulse has made Creedence’s and Fogerty’s work survive without seeming dated. Deeply informed by what came before, imbued with the values of directness and simplicity, it has served to influence countless similarly-minded performers who came afterwards. In short — and without having anything to do with the marketing term — it’s classic rock.
Rock Classics Volume I
Artist: Various Artists
Release Date: 2007
Creedence blasted onto the scene with a lengthy meditation on Dale Hawkins’s biggest hit, “Suzie Q,” which had featured a guitar part by James Burton, one of the great unsung string-benders of his era. Hawkins had an eye for great guitarists — later, he often used Roy Buchanan — but he never had a hit as big as this one. He moved to Dallas and got into production work, with credits including Bruce Channel’s “Hey, Baby,” whose harmonica part, by Delbert McClinton, inspired the Beatles to use one on “Love Me Do.” He produced the Top Ten hit “Western Union” by local band the Five Americans, and in 1970, became a consultant for Houston-based International Artists, dealing with the 13th Floor Elevators. The persistence of Creedence’s “Suzie Q” as an FM radio staple revived his performing career, and he continues to perform occasionally to delighted audiences.
Spellbound
Artist: Screamin’ Jay Hawkins
Release Date: 2006
If blues singer Jay Hawkins hadn’t gotten incredibly drunk while trying to record a song he didn’t particularly like, would he have become the icon he became? Hawkins always maintained that he didn’t even remember the take that resulted in his notorious 1956 underground hit “I Put a Spell on You,” which, although it never made the charts, was one of those records teenagers passed around, marvelling at his grunts, snorts, bellows, wails and shrieks, as he stumbled his way through a song that was pretty inherently spooky to begin with. Creedence re-introduced it into the rock repertoire as the opening track on their debut album, and it’s stayed there ever since. As for Screamin’ Jay, he embraced the record, making it the centerpiece of a live act that saw him carried onstage in a coffin, brandishing a flaming skull, and wearing outrageous clothing while he sang such memorable numbers as “Constipation Blues,” which became a major hit in Japan.
The Essential Collection
Artist: Tommy McLain
Release Date: 1997
Nobody in Creedence was, in fact, born on the bayou, not even one of the bayous on the Sacramento River, but there was a rich body of rock music that was. Louisiana and east Texas was the touring ground of swamp pop show bands like the Boogie Kings and Randy and the Rockets. Covering soul and country hits of the moment, driven by crackerjack horn sections, and fronted by versatile vocalists, most of these bands were doomed to local obscurity until various British fans rediscovered them in the 1980s. Among the vocalists were such greats as Rod Bernard and Johnnie Allen, but possibly the greatest was pint-sized Tommy McLain, whose version of Don Gibson’s “Sweet Dreams” cracked the national charts in 1969, and whose impossibly pure high voice was — and is — an incredible expressive instrument, and his backup recording bands had some of the best veterans of the swamp pop circuit. Listen to him and you’ll hear a possible source for John Fogerty’s singing style.
The Complete Sun Singles
Artist: Carl Perkins
Release Date: 2000
Carl Perkins influenced Creedence because Carl Perkins was one of any true rocker’s influences. Someone who could write a song about something as silly as blue suede shoes and then play it with such passion that it never occurred to you that his life didn’t depend on them was clearly on the right track. His background, too, was perfect: born to dirt-poor Southerners who worked the fields next to their black neighbors, Carl absorbed the country music and blues around him and forged it into a style that was so tight that there was a week when he had the top record on the pop, country, and rhythm and blues charts — “Blue Suede Shoes,” in fact. Even more germane to the Creedence/Fogerty connection was his guitar style, in which country and blues elements came together in absolute simplicity, but thrilling originality. Although it’s not as simple as it might seem: just ask the Beatles, who really had to work at coming close when they covered his stuff.
Arthur
Artist: Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup
Release Date: 1994
Once again, anyone who plays rock & roll owes something to this Mississippian who began playing the blues when he landed in Chicago in the late 1930s. Elvis Presley’s total reworking of his “It’s All Right, Mama” was the start of the King’s career (and caused a grateful Elvis to pay for an RCA Records session for Crudup after he became a star), but several other of Crudup’s songs also found their way into the rock repertoire, including “My Baby Left Me,” which showed up on Creedence’s album Cosmo’s Factory. Crudup, in common with many artists on RCA’s “race” subsidiary Bluebird, overrecorded like crazy in the 1930s, but he was a popular performer in Chicago clubs, playing to transplanted Southerners like himself, and as blues styles in the Windy City changed, he moved back home, where he was a successful bootlegger by the time Elvis brought his name back into public recognition. He died in 1974, having seen his career revived by a younger generation.
Absolutely The Best
Artist: Lead Belly
Release Date: 2000
Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter was also a powerful influence on rock & roll, but he entered through a different door from most blues singers, having been part of the first American folk revival of the late 1940s, and contributed the first big urban folk hit, “Good Night, Irene,” to the Weavers. The story of his discovery by folklorist Alan Lomax, his subsequent release from prison, and his adoption by the folkies around the left-wing scene which also included Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie is well-known, and this led to his making dozens of records of his music, most of which, it must be said, isn’t really classic blues. Creedence included two of his best-known songs, “Midnight Special” and “Cotton Fields,” on their Willie and the Poor Boys album, and made them their own, which is unsurprising because Creedence, although they recorded the occasional blues song, were more interested in the song part of that term than the blues part.
The Best Of Booker T. And The M.G.’s
Artist: Booker T. And The M.G.’s
Release Date: 1994
John Fogerty was once asked, who was the best rock & roll band in the world? “Booker T and the MGs,” he replied, without hesitation. Superficially, you won’t hear much of the Memphis quartet’s music in Creedence or Fogerty’s later solo work; their contribution is subtle. What you hear when you listen to one of their little masterpieces, tossed-off jams on the surface but with surprising depth, is a four-piece machine in perfect working order. It’s almost the platonic ideal of how to take four great players and make a single sound, something that Creedence did, at least in the beginning. Sure, there are solos — Steve Cropper’s guitar in particular — and sure, Booker T’s organ leads the way with the melody, but it’s obvious they’re listening to each other all the time and the exuberance and joy of it all comes shining through.
Burnin’
Artist: John Lee Hooker
Release Date: 1962
Mr. Hooker proposes “boogie.” Messrs. Fogerty and company propose “chooglin’.” Is there a difference, class? Discuss, and show your work. There’s no doubt that the rhythmic, but harmonically static, work of John Lee Hooker played a major role in shaping the jam culture that 1960s rock music gave to the world. Starting with “Boogie, Chillen” in 1949, Hooker’s deceptively primitive-sounding blues, mostly just his voice and his guitar, was popular with a significant sector of the blues audience, as if it was a stern warning against getting too fancy. In the late 1960s, when American guitar bands rediscovered the blues, Hooker’s blueprint was one of the main ones they used for their extended workouts, and Creedence was no exception, since they served up several Hooker covers on their early albums. As always, they weren’t straight copies of the original, and the Stu Cook-Doug Clifford rhythm section came up with the rhythm they called “chooglin’,” which became one of their trademarks.
The Essential Little Richard
Artist: Little Richard
Release Date: 1958
As with Carl Perkins, any rocker who doesn’t claim Richard Penniman as an ancestor is lying. He pioneered things that people today take for granted: wild onstage behavior, ambiguous sexuality, a driving beat, insane shrieking vocal tics, goofy lyrics. On his records, Earl Palmer took just enough swing out of standard blues beats to invent rock & roll drumming. The Beatles covered his stuff, and, of course, so did Creedence, recording “Good Golly, Miss Molly” on Bayou Country. Hard as it may be to believe now, by 1969, when that album came out, Richard had slipped into the shadows (although some knew Jimi Hendrix had toured as his guitarist), but this was as much due to his having spent time in the ministry and renouncing rock & roll — if only for a short while — as anything. His obscurity didn’t last long, and as of 2007, he was still going strong, showing up in films, on television, and occasional live shows, reminding the youngsters how it’s done.
The Best Of Hank Williams
Artist: Hank Williams
Release Date: 2002
After Creedence broke up, John Fogerty turned up the “country” knob, first with his one-man bluegrass band, the Blue Ridge Rangers, and later in his solo albums. (It had always been there, but the band wasn’t the best place for it.) And if you’re going to be country, your work will bear echoes of this inventor of modern country music. Williams was the first to add a personal touch to his lyrics, a result of hearing a lot of blues in his youth; this innovation propelled him to the stardom which would long outlast his death at age 29. He also wrote compelling melodies to fit those lyrics, which saw his songs covered by pop artists and even rockers like Fats Domino, whose version of “Jambalaya” was the first many people heard. His small body of work is a cornerstone of American popular music, and alt-country types are still finding out how difficult such simplicity can be.
Classic Sides
Artist: Jimmie Rodgers
Release Date: 2002
Before Hank Williams, there was Jimmie Rodgers, a Mississippian who’d been schooled in the blues and then gone on to hone a repertoire which deftly mixed them with a broad streak of sentimentality. Country’s first superstar, his “blue yodel” and use of the Hawaiian steel guitar in his recordings would form a template for country that lasted until Hank Williams’ innovations expanded the genre’s vocabulary. Nor was it only country musicians who were influenced: Howlin’ Wolf famously said that his trademark “Ah-ooo” was his failed attempt to imitate Rodgers’ yodel. Rodgers’ debt to black music was not only in the “floating verses” from traditional blues he used in some of his songs, but also in his famous recording session with Louis Armstrong, not to mention his friendship with the Carter Family, who were discovered at the same RCA Records audition as he was, and who also partook of black instrumental and lyrical influences.
Sun Recordings
Artist: Roy Orbison
Roy Orbison was all about The Voice. Although his best-known songs, hits like “Running Scared” and “Crying,” can be almost operatic in their tension between backing orchestra and vocal, Orbison started as something of a rockabilly, which is why these lesser-known Sun tracks make sense when we’re talking about John Fogerty. It was clear that Orbison’s band, the Teen Kings, weren’t capable of going all the way with him, but the mixture of their enthusiastic rocking and Roy’s singular voice is a model from which Fogerty could have extrapolated both Creedence and his later solo career. At a point where instrumental expertise seemed to be more highly valued than vocal prowess, Fogerty’s singing could grab you by the ears and make you re-evaluate that. Like Orbison, the idea of a hook was never far from his mind, although his songwriting chops were a bit more sophisticated than “Ooby dooby, ooby dooby, doo-wah, doo-wah, doo-wah.” Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

Blues Guitar Solo
It is essential for musicians to be able to play music without the support of a band and this is also an essential element in a blues guitar solo where the guitarist must play notes which sound correct. This is because when the guitarist plays a solo, the blues sound all depends on the notes he plays. The set of notes is known as the scale. The scale is set to suit the songs and chords strummed by the blues guitar solo. There are several different music books that speak of the numerous scales, chords and melodies that are attached to create the perfect blues guitar solo.
Pentatonic Scale in Blues Guitar Solo
One of the scales used in blues guitar solo is the pentatonic scale. This is named because of the scale’s use of the only five (penta) different notes. It starts with the minor pentatonic scale on the chord E. The key of E is used in the beginning because of its ability to open all the guitars strings to a certain scale. This kind of minor scale is perfect for the deep sound produced in most blues, However, there is also a major pentatonic scale which is not very common in the blues guitar solo. Simple blues guitar solos can be played with open strings using the E minor scale.
The Blues Scale in Blues Guitar Solo
The blue notes are widely argued because of the different formats in which they exist. The most common blues scale played for the blues guitar solo is the diminished third and seventh. These notes have a lowered pitch compared to those played on a major scale. This pitch is to create the feeling in a blues song. This kind of scale uses a mixture of African and European music styles to create a perfected blues guitar solo.
Criticism of Blues Guitar Solo
There is one theory that does not support the blues guitar solo. This is known as the classical music theory which does not taken into consideration the music produced by the blues. According to this theory, the blues itself is a confused and incorrect format of music, making the blues guitar solo an eccentric and wrong form of music. This includes the chord progressions which gives the music played by the artists a bluesy form. The reason behind this format of blues guitar solo music is because of African-Americans attempt to play their local music on western instruments while singing their folk songs, which eventually led to the blues

Pci-express Vs Agp: Which to Choose?
What is PCI-Express and AGP?
There are two ways to connect a graphics card to a motherboard, either via an AGP or PCI Express slot located on your motherboard. A motherboard only supports one of these slots, so if you’re looking for a new video card make sure you’re aware of whether your motherboard supports AGP, or PCI-Express.
AGP has been the standard for a long time now, but it is old technology. Its days are almost over, and it’s only a matter of time until PCI-Express completely takes over and AGP is left for dead.
Advantages of PCI-Express
The benefit of PCI Express is that it can handle a greater data throughput than an AGP slot. PCI Express offers performance of up to 4 times faster than the fastest AGP slot. It’s relatively new technology, and it isn’t being used to its full potential yet. Although, we predict that games released in the next 1-2 years will make full use of PCI Express technology.
Another advantage of PCI Express is you can connect more than one video card to your computer for extra performance. This is impossible with AGP, since a motherboard can only ever have one AGP slot.
Should I Buy a PCI-Express or AGP Video Card?
If you’re simply upgrading your gaming computer with a new video card, you should check whether your motherboard supports AGP or PCI Express, and then choose a card accordingly. Don’t worry if your motherboard has an AGP slot. Even though it’s not the latest technology, AGP is going to stay around for a long time. You can still find a great video card with AGP.
On the other hand, if you’re building a new system from scratch, you have the choice. We recommend choosing a gaming video card with PCI Express, and a motherboard that supports it. As we said before, the games of the future will soon harness the power of this new technology, leaving AGP in the dark. So by choosing PCI Express now, it will save you the upgrade later when AGP becomes obsolete.
Another thing to keep in mind is not to confuse PCI-Express with its older cousin PCI. A long time ago you would connect your graphics card through a PCI slot on your motherboard. This is very slow compared to today’s standards, and is never used anymore.
Hopefully this article has enlightened you about the issues regarding AGP and PCI-Express.

Keywords Are It! Seven Powerful/Useful Keyword Marketing Tools
Copyright (c) 2009 Titus Hoskins
After years of running websites and earning a full-time online income, I am constantly reminded that it all comes down to keywords. Actually, it all comes down to obtaining top rankings for your profitable keywords in the search engines, mainly Google.
And that statement has to be refined even further, it’s all about obtaining top keyword rankings and keeping them at the top. You must consistently keep your keywords in the top spots on that all important first page of SERPs since your keyword rankings can make or break your online marketing.
If you’re targeting extremely competitive and profitable keywords you will have your work cut out for you; unless you have tons of money to buy your way (links) into the top spots, expect to spend months if not years, getting to those top listings. Google has frowned upon link buying and has taken steps to fight it, but this practice is still widespread throughout the web.
Most beginning and honest webmasters want to take the proper route and earn those top rankings by providing good quality content that web users will actually find helpful and useful. They build those links the natural way by offering viral link bait in the form of videos, ebooks, articles, reports… all branded with backlinks to their sites.
Gradually over time, these links will build up and your keyword rankings will go up in the search engines. People will find your content and bookmark it in all the social bookmark sites like Digg, Facebook, MySpace… and your rankings will climb even faster.
However, since keyword marketing has become extremely competitive, you do need a little help with achieving those top rankings. Over the years I have tested and used many keyword tools and I have listed some of the best ones below. (Just Google to find links to these tools and programs.)
Internet Success Spider
One of the first keyword tools I ever used was The Internet Success Spider by Neil Shearing which is now free. The Spider is a very simple, yet powerful keyword tool because it shows you the major players in your keyword niche. It slowly works in the background to give you valuable information on your keywords. I realized very quickly, with online marketing (like most things in life) information is what separates the losers from the winners.
Keyword Elite
Later, I tried and am still using Keyword Elite by Brad Callen, it remains one of the best keyword research tools on the market. I can directly link many of my keyword successes to my early use of this tool.
Brad Callen simply creates some of the best marketing tools for online webmasters and marketers. KE is no exception. It will do some very comprehensive keyword research for you and let you easily arrange that information. Keyword Elite has earned a well deserved reputation as a very useful marketing tool.
Brainstorm It – Site Build It
Another, perhaps even more powerful keyword tool is Brainstorm It! which is offered through the Site Build It marketing/hosting system run by Ken Evoy. This is a powerful keyword analyzer and finder, which is now in its third version.
SBI run by Ken Evoy creates many tools for webmasters and Brainstorm It, Version 3 is simply one of the best. This keyword tool will do both Vertical and Lateral keyword research to give the most comprehensive array of information for your online marketing. Only negative, you only get so many Wordtracker credits and you have to pay extra when those run out. Actually, Wordtracker should be at the top of any keyword tool list, but I have mainly used it in conjunction with other programs like Brainstorm It.
Google Keyword Tool
Then again there is the Google own keyword system run through it’s Adwords program. Like everything Google does, this keyword tool can be very helpful especially for the novice online marketer.
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
MSN Commercial Intention Of Keywords
Not to be outdone, another helpful tool is Microsoft’s Online Commercial Intention tool, which tells the probability your chosen keyword has a commercial value to it:
http://adlab.msn.com/Online-Commercial-Intention/Default.aspx
SeoBook Online Keyword Tool
For very quick keyword references, I like using Aaron Wall’s keyword tool on his Seobook site. It’s quick and gives very good stats for your chosen keywords.
SeoQuake
Still yet another SEO (sort of related to keywords) is the SeoQuake Toolbar which you can run on Firefox. It will slow down your browser but it will cough up valuable information about your own site and more importantly, it will give you valuable information on your competitors’ sites. One feature that I find very helpful is the SEM Rank and SEM Price, which tells you how much your Search Engine keyword traffic is worth.
Plus, you must not ignore your website stats and traffic logs for they can supply you with your most valuable keyword information regarding your site. Closely examine which keyword phrases are bringing in the traffic and/or sales. Develop these keywords with your online marketing, especially any “long tail” keyword phrases visitors are using to find your site or products. These longer keyword phrases have proven to be the most profitable because many times consumers using these phrases already have their minds made up on what they’re going to buy.
Why am I using all these keyword tools?
Simply because obtaining and keeping top rankings for my chosen keywords is my livelihood. Unless I can keep that targeted traffic coming from these keywords via the search engines; it’s game over. Therefore, I use all the tools and information I can gather in order to keep those keywords at the top.
Google is always changing, you really have to stay on your game if you want to keep your keywords at the top. It all boils down to producing quality content web surfers need and want. The SEO pretty much takes care of itself as long as you keep promoting your keywords with good viral branded content like videos, articles, ebooks, PDF reports… and you must mix up your online link building to include links from such places as Facebook, Digg, Google Bookmarks, MySpace… I have always used the free “Addthis” button to all my important content and this has resulted in 100′s of free links that your visitors will build for you!
I also believe you have to be careful when using viral articles to vary your anchor text (clickable part of a link) so that you don’t have the same keyword phrase repeated 100′s of times across the web. Just use different versions of your keyword phrase and if you can, get those keyword links in the body of the article, as near to the top of the page as you can. This will make your link building look much more natural in the eyes of the search engines, especially Google.
Overall, you must have hundreds, if not thousands of keywords that you’re targeting with your online marketing. You must constantly keep building links for those keywords from related sites on the web. Sometimes it is helpful to truly view your keywords as organic, something that keeps growing naturally on its own. But you must first build a solid foundation with good quality content and then keep nurturing those keywords with good quality link bait so that others will bookmark, recommend and link to your keyword content.
Over the years, if there is anything I have learned about keywords which always holds true, it is this: you must be persistent. You must keep at it: building links, building content… it will usually take months, if not years, to get those top rankings for very competitive keywords and it will take some further work to consistently keep those keywords in the top positions. But you will quickly learn keywords are well worth it since they can easily make or break your online marketing.

Were you aware that your music can be streamed into Second Life using the same technology as internet radio? Bringing your music to this new audience requires a Shoutcast source client, which sends your music to a streaming server, which subsequently rebroadcasts your music to all the listeners in Second Life.
This article lists the leading choices in Shoutcast/Icecast source clients. This source client is the piece of software that runs on your computer, connecting the music you play with the streaming server.
What it does
The Shoutcast/Icecast streaming source client takes audio input from a program or hardware device, encodes it into a media stream, and sends the media stream on to a streaming server. Each step of this process requires configuration, and each program differs in the specifics of where you may find these settings. However, the settings themselves are fairly universal.
Music source
The input to the source client may come from a media player such as iTunes, Winamp, or Windows Media Player, or it may also come from a hardware device connected to your computer — such as a mixer connected to a sound card or even an integrated laptop microphone. Your chosen source client will present a list of possible inputs from which you can choose to broadcast.
Encoding
Some source clients may be able to encode into multiple media formats. However, for compatibility with Second Life, you will need to use mp3. The Second Life viewer on your listeners’ end does not support WMA, AAC, Ogg, or other formats. Further, you will find that if you try to use the most pristine mp3 encoding settings, your listeners will experience skips in the stream. It is best not to use anything higher than 44.1 kHz, 64 kbps, stereo. You should be able to find these settings grouped together.
Specifying the stream server
Lastly, you will need to specify the Shoutcast/Icecast streaming server to which the source client will connect. This will be in the form of a URL or an IP Address, a Port number, and a Password. Some streaming clients allow you to build a ‘library’ of servers, each with their own URL, port, and password. This is handy if you regularly perform at a number of venues. Each venue will have its own server. This allows you to, once configured, merely select a given venue’s server from a list, and have all the values set at once. If your source client does not have this feature, you will need to manually enter this data every time for each venue.
Criteria
For each listed software streaming client, I list the price, where you can obtain it, what platform it runs upon, and other attributes. After reading this article, you should be ready to choose a streaming source client that meets your needs.
Before I list the choices, I will first define what the various attributes mean.
Operating System (OS) – This tells you what operating system the streaming source client is compatible with. There are choices for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and other UNIX-like OSs.
Plugin vs. Standalone – Some Shoutcast/Icecast source clients are ‘plugins’, which operate inside of other programs. An example is the Shoutcast DSP Plugin, which installs ‘into’ Winamp as a host. Other source clients run in their own window, providing all needed functionality themselves.
Record functionality – Some source clients will also record (or ‘archive’) your stream. The stream is not only sent on to the streaming server, but it also is written to your computer’s disk as an mp3 file. This allows you to play back your stream at a later date.
Presenting the candidates
butt (broadcast using this tool)
- Free
- Linux, MacOS and Windows.
- Open source project hosted on Sourceforge
- Standalone
- Streaming and recording simultaneously with different bitrates
This relative newcomer provides all the functionality that you would need or want. The fact that it is free, and runs on almost any computer, makes it a great choice.
Winamp with Shoutcast DSP Plugin
- Free
- Windows, Mac OS, Linux, other UNIX
- Winamp makes Winamp Standard
- Shoutcast makes the Shoutcast DSP Plugin
- Host media player and Plugin
- No built in recording functionality
This solution has been the mainstay in the Windows arena, mostly due to its price.
Nicecast
- $40 (free demo)
- Mac OS
- Rogueamoeba is the company behind Nicecast
- Standalone
- Archive function
For years, this has been the standard in the Mac arena. Full featured.
Simplecast
- $139
- Windows
- Spacialaudio produces simplecast
- Standalone
- No built in recording functionality
This selection comes from a company with a full line of professional internet radio tools.
Reaper with Shoutcast plugin
- $60 (free demo)
- Windows
- Cockos makes Reaper
- Landoleet is where you can get the reaper_shoutcast.dll plugin (this is NOT the same as the Shoutcast DSP Plugin for Winamp)
- Host DAW and Plugin
- Full multitrack recording capability
Reaper is a full-functioned DAW, from a company founded by the guy who first invented Shoutcast technology. Extremely powerful, with complexity to match.
EdCast
- Free
- Windows
- Oddsock makes edcast
- Available either standalone, or as a plugin for Winamp or Foobar2000.
- Recorder not built in.
Both EdCast and its precursor Oddcast are from the same developer, along with a number of other useful music tools (including a stream recorder).
The envelope, please
If you are just getting started in streaming your music into Second Life, I recommend that you start with butt. Silly name, I know. However, it is free, does everything you want it to do, and runs the same way on any computer you’re likely to have. Plus, it is an open source program, meaning that its future is pretty much assured.
Any of the other choices would be fine as well. They all work pretty much hiccup-free. If your needs are unique, there may be some reason to prefer another over butt.
Myself, I use Reaper with the Shoutcast plugin. Reaper is a full-featured music production DAW like Pro Tools, Logic, Sonar, etc. In fact, it was my DAW before I started streaming into Second Life. The fact that Reaper is from the guy the guy that invented internet radio (as well as Winamp, Gnutella, and other modern necessities) holds strong sway with me.
Get going!
You really can’t go wrong with any of the above. Just grab one, grab the free Second Life viewer, create a free Second Life account, log on, and start performing for the eager Second Life audiences!
I hope you join us in this journey to a strange and wonderful new world. In the meantime, you may wish to do some early exploring on your own – it is free to get started! Just click the link below:

Native Instruments debuts first iOS app, iMaschine (TUAW)
For some time I’ve wondered when and if Native Instruments would enter the iOS
music-making market. Being that they have such a respected presence with their
awesome music software and audio interfaces in studios and with musicians
around the world, it was irresistible to think of Native Instruments producing
something fantastic for an iOS device.
Now their first offering has arrived for the iPhone with iMaschine. As
demonstrated by musician and soul singer Jamie Lidell in the video below,
iMaschine is a song creation sketchpad. With a whole bunch of drum samples and
beats, the ability to create your own one-shot samples using the iPhone’s mic,
virtual keyboards, effects and a 4-track recorder / mixer so you can lay down
some vocals too, iMaschine has plenty to offer to work up a song idea.
One of the cool features is that once you’ve come up with something good, you
can export it directly into Maschine (the complete desktop package) or upload
a loop or song directly to SoundCloud.
I’m looking forward to giving this a go as well as any forthcoming apps Native
Instruments may introduce. How about Absynth or Kontakt for iOS?
