The Canal Boat A Brief History
The Canal Boat – A Brief History
A canal boat (also known as a narrowboat or narrow boat) is a boat of a distinctive design, made to fit the narrow canals of England and Wales.
Narrowboats at Calcutt Boats marina
In the context of British Inland Waterways, “narrow boat” refers to the original working boats built in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries for carrying goods on the narrow canals (where locks and bridge holes would have a minimum width of 7 feet (2.1 m)). The term is extended to modern “narrowboats” used for recreation and occasionally as homes, whose design is an interpretation of the
Canal Boat Terminology
Purists tend to use the term with a space (narrow boat) when referring to an original boat or a replica, and to omit the space when referring to a modern boat used for leisure or as a residence – but this is not a hard and fast rule.[citation needed] The single word ‘narrowboat’ has been adopted by authorities such as British Waterways and the magazine Waterways World to refer to all boats built in the style and tradition of the narrow canal locks.
Although some canal boats were built to a design based on river barges, it is incorrect to refer to a narrowboat (or narrow boat) as a barge. In the context of the British inland waterways, a barge is usually a much wider, cargo-carrying boat or a modern boat modelled on one, certainly more than 7 feet (2.1 m) wide.
It is also incorrect (or at least incongruous) to refer to a narrowboat as a longboat, although this name was sometimes used in the Midlands in working-boat days.
Usage has not quite settled down as regards (a) boats based on narrowboat design, but too wide for narrow canals; or (b) boats the same width as narrowboats but based on other types of boat.
Canal Boat Size
The key distinguishing feature of a narrowboat is its width: it must be no more than 7 feet (2.13 m) wide to navigate the British narrow canals. Some old boats are very close to this limit (often built 7 feet 1½ inches/2.17 metres or slightly wider), and can have trouble using locks that are not quite as wide as they should be because of subsidence. Modern boats are usually 6 feet 10 inches (2.08 m) wide to guarantee easy passage everywhere.
Because of their slenderness, some narrowboats seem very long. The maximum length is about 70 feet (21 m), the length of most locks on the narrow canals. However, modern narrowboats tend to be shorter than this, so that they can cruise anywhere on the connected network of British canals – including on the “wide” canals (built for wider, but shorter, boats). The shortest lock on the main network is Salterhebble Middle Lock on the Calder and Hebble Navigation, at about 56 feet (17 m) long. However, the C&H is a wide canal, so the lock is about 14 feet 2 inches (4.32 m) wide. This makes the largest “go-anywhere-on-the-network” narrowboat slightly longer (about 60 feet) than the straight length of the lock, because it can (with a certain amount of “shoehorning”) lie diagonally. Some locks on isolated waterways are as short as 40 feet (12.2 m).
Hire fleets on British canals can contain narrowboats of many lengths from about 30 feet (9.1 m) upwards, to allow parties of different sizes or different budgets to hire a boat.
Development – traditional working canal boats
The first working canal boats played a key part in the economic changes accompanying the British Industrial Revolution. They were wooden boats drawn by a horse walking on the canal towpath led by a crew member, often a child. Narrowboats were chiefly designed for carrying cargo, though there were some packet boats, carrying passengers, letters, and parcels.
Boatmen’s families originally lived ashore, but in the 1830s as canals started to feel competition from the new railways, families (especially of owner/skippers of independent single boats) started to take up home afloat. This was partly because they could no longer afford rents, partly to provide extra hands to work the boats harder, faster and further, and partly to keep families together. However, as late as 1858, a “Household Words” article states that the Grand Junction Canal company did not allow the boatmen’s families on board – and the crew of the non-stopping (“fly”) boat in the article (the skipper, two crewmen, and a ‘youth’) is said to be typical.
Historic working narrowboats on the Macclesfield Canal in Cheshire, England. The motor boat at the front “Forget Me Not” is pulling along an unpowered butty “Lilith”. This was the traditional working style used on working boats after motor boats became common.
The rear portion of the boat became the cosy “boatman’s cabin”, familiar from picture postcards and museums, famous for its space-saving ingenuity and for its interior made attractive by a warm stove, a steaming kettle, gleaming brass, fancy lace, painted housewares, and decorated plates. Although such descriptions rarely consider the actual comfort of a large family working an extremely hard and long day, and sleeping in the one tiny cabin, it is no doubt true that at the time there were many workers in harder, indoor, trades with less healthy conditions and worse accommodation where the family were separated for long hours rather than being together all day. Nonetheless it was impossible for such mobile families to send their children to school, and most boat people remained illiterate and ostracised by those living ‘on the bank’.
As diesel and steam replaced the tow horse in the early twentieth century, it became possible to move more cargo with the same manpower by towing a second unpowered boat, commonly referred to as a “butty”, “buttyboat” or “butty boat”. There was now no horse to look after, but someone had to steer the butty, unless on a wide canal such as the Grand Union Canal where the two boats could be roped side-to-side or ‘breasted up’, and handled as one while working locks.
Cargo-carrying by narrow boat was almost extinguished as a way of life between 1945 and the last regular long distance traffic finishing in 1970. However some traffics continued into the 1980s and beyond including over 2 million tonnes of aggregate carried on the Grand Union (River Soar) from 1976 to 1996, latterly using wide beam barges however, and aggregate currently carried by narrow boats (and wide barges) between Denham and West Drayton on the Grand Union Canal. A few people are doing their best to keep the tradition alive, mostly by “one-off” deliveries rather than regular runs, or by selling goods such as coal to other boaters.
There are many enthusiasts dedicated to restoring the remaining old boats, often members of the Historic Narrow Boat owners Club and there are also many replicas ornately painted with the same traditional designs, usually of roses and castles. If the boat is not horse-drawn, it may have a refurbished, slow-revving, vintage diesel engine, and there are even some steam-driven narrow boats such as the ex-Fellows Morton and Clayton steamer President.
Painted decoration on canal boats
Decoration on a traditional English canal boat: roses on the water can (top) and castles on the open doors to the cabin
By the latter part of the 19th century it was common practice to paint roses and castles on both narrow boats themselves and their fixtures and fittings. Common sites include the doors to the cabin, the water can or barrel and the side of the boat along with ornate lettering giving the boat’s name and owner.
The origin of the roses and castles found on canal boats is unclear. The first written reference to them appears to be in an 1858 edition of the magazine Household Words in one of a series of articles titled “On the Canal” but while this shows that the art form must have existed by this date it doesn’t provide us with an origin. For some time, a popular suggestion was that it had some form of Gypsy origin, however there does not appear to be a significant link between the Gypsy and boating communities. Other suggestions include transfer of styles from the clock-making industry (in particular the decoration on the face), the japanning industry or the pottery industry. There is certainly a similarity in style and a geographical overlap, but no solid proof of a link. There are similar styles of folk art in Scandinavia, Germany, Turkey and Bangladesh.
In the eighteenth century, the similar Dutch “Hinderloopen” paintwork would only have been a sailing barge journey away from the Thames. There is also an article in the Midland Daily Telegraph of 22 July 1914 that credits the practice painting of water cans, at least, to a Mr Arthur Atkins. The date of the events make the claim possible, but would require the Household Words article to be reporting on the very start of a phenomenon, rather than – as its tone suggests – something that had existed for some time. Until further evidence comes to light, it is impossible to support or deny the claim that Arthur Atkins was responsible for the start of the practice and thus the origin of the paintings remains uncertain.
While the practice declined as commercial use of the canals dwindled, it has seen something of a revival in recent times with the emergence of leisure boating. Narrowboat decoration with roses and castle themes are a reasonably common sight on today’s canals, although these may utilise cheaper computer-printed vinyl transfers in place of the traditional craft of hand-painted designs.
Modern canal boats
The number of licensed boats on canals and rivers managed by British Waterways (BW), a government organisation, was estimated at about 27,000 in 2006. There are perhaps another 5,000 unlicensed boats kept in private moorings or on other waterways. Most of the boats on BW waterways are steel cruisers popularly referred to as narrowboats.
Modern narrowboats are used for annual holidays, weekend breaks or as permanent residences. Usually, they have steel hulls and a steel superstructure, but when they were first being developed for leisure use in the 1970s glass re-inforced plastic (fibre-glass) or timber was often used for the superstructures. They are usually powered by modern diesel engines, and are fitted inside to a high standard. There will be at least 6 feet (1.8 m) internal headroom, and similar domestic facilities as a small landward home: central heating, flush toilets, shower or even bath, four-ring hobs, oven, grill, microwave oven, and refrigerator; quite a few also have satellite television and mobile broadband via the use of 3G broadband technology. Externally, their resemblance to traditional boats can vary from a faithful imitation (false “rivets”, and copies of traditional paintwork) through “interpretation” (clean lines and simplified paintwork) through to a free-style approach which does not try to pretend in any way that this is a traditional boat.
They are owned by individuals, shared by a group of friends (or by a more formally organised syndicate), rented out by holiday firms, or used as cruising hotels. A few boats are lived on permanently: either based in one place (though long-term moorings for residential narrowboats are currently very difficult to find) or continuously moving around the network (perhaps with a fixed location for the coldest months, when many stretches of canal are closed by repair works or “stoppages”).
Modern canal boat types
On most narrowboats steering is by a tiller, as it was on all working narrow boats, and the steerer stands at the stern of the boat, aft of where a person emerges from the hatchway and rear doors at the top of the steps up from the cabin. The steering area comes in three basic types, each meeting different needs in terms of maximising internal space; having a more traditional appearance; having a big enough rear deck for everyone to enjoy summer weather or long evenings; or protection for the steerer in bad weather. Each type has its strong advocates. However, the boundaries are not fixed, and some boats blur the categories as designers try out slightly different arrangements and combinations.
Canal boats with traditional stern
Many modern canal boats retain the traditional layout of a small open, unguarded “counter” or deck behind the rear doors from which the crew can step onto land. It is possible to steer from the counter, but this is not very safe, with the propeller churning below only one misstep away. The length of the “tiller extension” allows the steerer to stand more safely on the top step, forward of the rear doors (on a working boat, this step would have been over the top of the coal box). On cold days, the steerer can even close the rear doors behind them, and be in relative comfort, their lower body in the warmth of the cabin, and only their upper body emerging from the hatchway and exposed to the elements. In good weather, many trad-stern steerers sit up on the hatchway edge, a high vantage point giving good all-round visibility. On trad boats, the bow “well-deck” forms the main outside viewing area, because the traditional stern is not large enough for anyone other than the steerer to stand on safely.
Canal boats with cruiser stern
Cruiser stern narrowboats are designed to allow more people to be on deck during the reasonably good weather of the British summer holiday season. The hatch and rear doors are farther forward than on a traditional boat, creating a large open deck between counter and rear doors, protected by a rail (perhaps with seats) around the back and sides. At the rear, a “cruiser” narrowboat looks very different from traditional boats. The large rear deck provides a good social space or al fresco dining area, but in the winter (or the occasionally less than perfect weather of the British Summer) the steerer is quite unprotected from wind and rain. The lack of an enclosed engine room means that engine heat does not contribute to keeping the boat warm and there is wasted space above the deck area. The name for this style arises because the large open rear deck resembles that of the large rear cockpits common on glass-fibre (GRP) river cruisers. The “cruiser” stern also allows the engine to be located under the deck and not in the cabin as it is in a traditional-stern boat. Although this then makes access to the engine for maintenance more difficult,[citation needed] it does have the advantage that the engine is not located in the cabin and the ensuing noise and smell are not as much of an issue.
Canal boats with semi-traditional stern
A semi-traditional stern is a compromise to gain some of the “social” benefits of a cruiser stern, while retaining a more traditional design and providing some protection for the steerer in bad weather or in cooler seasons. As with the cruiser stern, the deck is extended back from the hatch and rear doors, but in this case most of the deck is protected at the sides by walls which extend back from the cabin sides – giving a more sheltered area for the steerer and companions, usually with lockers to sit on. The engine is located under the deck, much like a cruiser, again allowing a separation between the cabin and the engine bay, with the steps down to the cabin being located past the false sides of the “semi-trad” social area.
Canal boats with a butty stern
A butty boat is an un-powered boat traditionally with a larger rudder with (usually) a wooden tiller (known as an elum, a corruption of helm as the steering does not benefit from the force of water generated by the propeller. The tiller is usually removed and reversed in the rudder-post socket to get it out of the way when moored. A few butty boats have been converted into powered narrowboats like NB Sirius. The term butty is thought to have originated from the French, bateau, meaning boat.
Centre cockpit canal boats
A small number of steel narrowboats dispense with the need for a rear steering deck entirely, by imitating some river cruisers in providing wheel steering from a central cockpit.

My Vintage Spring/Summer 2011 Vintage Trend Report
As London Fashion Week draws to a close and New York seems a distant memory, we give you all the best tips for dressing on trend the vintage way…
70′s Chic
This season, the catwalks have been brimming with seventies inspired designs – and we love it! But this revival is less disco diva and more sexy boho secretary. Think sheer and silky pussybow blouses teamed with high waisted flared trousers or shorts. Big floppy hats and hippy dresses will certainly be a summer staple and the maxi dress is here to stay. Another recent trend revival is the jumpsuit that will be bigger than ever this year. And lest we forget the wedge heel – this summer’s footwear must!
Bold Colour
Black is all well and good but we are so glad to see the return of bright and bold colours to the runways! Particularly blocks of orange, yellow, blue and pink! There are some great vintage find in bright colours. For oranges and yellows the best era has to be the swinging sixties and for pinks and electric blue look no further than eighties cocktail dresses and separates. Take colour and experiment – the brave will conquer this summer!
Elegant Nudes
For a more subtle take on the 2011 trends, sheer and semi sheer nudes are a must. If you are pale skinned then stick to the creamy white nudes, tanned and olive skinned girls should veer towards peachy nudes and mixed race and dark skin-tones should go for nudes with a golden hue. Think floaty chiffon, fluid silk and thin draping satin for real glamour and style.
Club Tropicana
Moving on from the general floral trend of last spring/summer, this seasons floral print has got be be bold, brash and tropical! Bright shades, large palms and hoola flavours are a must! Look for fitted fifties dresses, vintage pencil skirts and vintage silk scarves to work the tropical trend.
Into the Blue
Maybe the forthcoming Royal Wedding has got us in the mood but the only colour that really matters this spring/summer is jewel-bright blue. Deep regal toned dresses, fitted jackets, chunky heels and floaty blouses – all in this stunning shade. Have a good look through all eras as there are gems to be found!
And staying firmly with us from last season….
Lace
Think vintage and you very often think lace – so there has never been a better time to embrace old school style. Lace has been seen everywhere this season, skirts, leggings, tops, dresses, gloves and even body suits. When shopping vintage go for feminine fifties pastels or dramatic eighties Madonna-esque black. And don’t be afraid to mix and match a few lace pieces in one ensemble.
Animal Instinct
It falls in and out of fashion but there is always that huge delight when we can dig out the animal prints once again! Designers have gone crazy for the big cats this season, sticking mainly to black, gold and tan. Go full out with a leopardskin print dress or dip your toes in the water with a cute bag or scarf. Mix with lace or sequins full full on party glam!
To The Max
Just when you thought maxi dresses were a summer-only staple, the floor length phenomenon has been quite literally sweeping the floors of the very best catwalks. Both skirts and dresses are in, think more glitz and glam than cotton cool. Shop for vintage seventies evening maxi dresses and fifties floor length gowns. Lurex, glitter and sequins are even better!
So it seems you really can buy vintage and stay on trend, as more and more designers take inspiration from the past. And on www.myvintage.co.uk you can even search by trend – making your gorgeous wardrobe updates even easier to find.

Love of vintage jewelry is deep rooted
Human taste does not remain the same, it keeps changing. It is impossible to predict how long a fashion would ride the tide. Very quickly people get tired with what they have and go searching for something new. However, jewelry which was made about eighty years ago has managed to remain dominant in the market to this day. Articles which have a very long life in the market are known as vintage articles. There are many dealers who deal with the vintage jewelry. The designs and the jewels which were made in the years 1920 to 1950 have gained the honor of being known as vintage jewelry.
Of all the pieces vintage rings are the most popular and are soought after till date. The designs are very bold and are made with several precious stones including diamonds, topaz and sapphires which are slightly expensive. There are others which are not so very expensive are have pearls and corals. There is one to suit every budget. They come in a combination of old designs and delicate filigree work. All the rings are made with total dedication regardless of the cost of the metal. A vintage ring can be made of gold, silver, white gold and platinum. People feel proud to include these rings into their family heirlooms.
It is not an exaggeration when we say that women and jewelry are inseparable. It would prove to be a perfect gift for any women. It is not possible to measure the joy and the pride of bride who receives a vintage wedding ring. An excellent collection of handcrafted wedding bands can be found. The spellbinding beauty of vintage gold rings and these bands is just like a reminder of the interesting relationship which the newlyweds would experience. Both the experiences are exotic in nature. The wedding band is as dear as the relationship solemnized with it. The fine and delicate workmanship on the ring is a true representation of the kind of relationship which they would share. It is strong like a rope yet very delicate.
Beautiful silver vintage rings with exquisite cut work form a section of the collection which one should not miss. Beautiful rings have lace like work crafted on them. A ring made of a combination of gold and silver rings is entwined with the help of rope like structure with delicate work crafted on them to make them standout. Rings which are made only of silver are equally beautiful. The workmanship is not compromised because of the value of the metal.
Thousands of designers have spring in the field of jewelry designing. None could replace the love for the jewelry of the period nor could execute an iota of difference in the love for the product. They are timeless and here to stay for a pretty long time. The scoring factor for them is their beauty.

It is important to check the authenticity of the product as the value attached to it may tempt sellers to include a few fake ones. There are many websites selling authentic vintage rings jewelry.

The idea is to choose from Vintage that gift that will satisfy their tastes and preferences. In addition, the stone that adorns the ring, brooch or pendant is also important; as you make sure the gift you present does meet her preference. How do you know if an article of clothing is vintage?
I come across a lot of older style clothing but Im not from that era so how do i know if it is vintage or not? Im considering selling jackets , suits etc.on ebay and want to make sure that what Im selling is actually vintage.
The short answer: research. You can do some research online by looking at websites and ebay listings, but nothing beats hands-on investigation. I would recommend visiting vintage clothing stores in your area. If you’re not in a major metro area, antique malls usually have a dealer or two that handles vintage clothing and/or accessories.
The more knowledgeable dealers will label their pieces by era and sometimes fabric type. If you’re fortunate, you may meet an owner or dealer who likes to talk shop and can give you some pointers. Learning the “feel” of vintage fabrics as opposed to modern fabrics as well as garment construction techniques can help you determine if a piece is an original or a modern copy. 1940s shoulder pads are usually much more skimpy in size but are more solid in feel than contemporary ones, for example. Look at the buttons – vintage buttons can be pretty distinctive.
Look for labels – not just for designers but for defunct brand names, union labels, and fabric content. At a certain point (sorry, I can’t remember the date off the top of my head!) clothing manufacturers started listing the fabric contents (100% cotton, 100% polyester, etc.) and providing care instructions. Those pieces would more recent in age. Size labels are deceptive since sizing has changed quite a bit, but you won’t see “half sizes” on more recent pieces.
Also, if you’re buying a lot of pieces from thrift stores, don’t rely on the workers correctly placing pieces in their “vintage” section. While my favorite local thrift store does a good job of segregating the 1970s double knit polyester into the vintage area, my best finds have been in the regular section.

Can I cut and re-sew a knit sweater?
I bought a vintage knit sweater and I want to cut it to be off the shoulder. Can I do this and re-sew it and it not unravel?
I have.
You will need to stitch close to where you intend to cut before cutting.
Also, add hem tape (on the seam line) to stabilize the cut edge before cutting, then turn and stitch again to hold the seam in place.

Vintage Neckties – Every Era Offers Neckwear You’ll Love to Wear
After all, the only difference between new and used clothing is that the latter is either pre-owned (from yesteryear) or vintage (if made over 20 years ago), whatever the case may be. This is not to mention the fact that many of today’s designers borrow fashion ideas from the past, with a modern twist, which brings us to one of many reasons a person would opt for vintage ties: why buy today’s borrowed ideas when one can wear the original!
To Celebrate Vintage Neckties and the Eras They Represent
Every decade has offered a different style of neckwear not seen before. Skinny neck ties were worn just before World War I, muted patterns were common in the 1920′s and 1930s, while bright, colorful, hand painted and novelty themes made their first appearance in the 1940′s. This included pin up girls plastered both on the front as well as printed onto the back lining just behind the tip. Things slimmed down again in the 1950′s and early 60′s until the introduction of wide Kipper neckties in the mid 60′s and into the 70′s. Narrow neckwear was again reintroduced in the 1980′s and it settled in at 3 ½ to 4 inches wide in the 1990′s. Every 20 years or so fashion changed, but it always harked back to and built upon the first time a particular style was introduced, as a way to pay homage to the originals. Such is the case, for example, with the wild graphic 40′s ties, which designer Martin Wong repeated in his “Screenplay by Martin Wong” line in the 90′s.
Today’s two toned stripes were first introduced in England in the late 1800′s with the advent of university, regimental and club neckties. Other patterns commonly worn today were the mainstay in the 20′s and 30′s. Thin rockabilly’s from the 50′s and 60′s morphed into a retro look in the 80′s and are currently slimmer versions of today’s regular widths. A photograph in a recent GQ Magazine showcased skinny neckwear with a panel ornament located midway up, a style straight from the 50′s.
Every era started a new trend which has since been copied, but as women know already, authentic clothing by the original designers is really special and today’s mass produced copy cats don’t come close to the originals. The same goes for men’s accessories, not to mention some designs can no longer be found unless one wears an original article of clothing.
To Go Down Memory Lane and to Wear One’s Favorite Styles Again
Men of a certain generation have their favorite types of ties, many of which they wore when in high school and during their first years at work. Sometimes they save them and other times they donate them during a spring cleaning only to eventually find them in back in fashion again years later. What goes around comes around, and with skinny neckties now popular again, many men won’t have to reminisce about their favorites but actually wear them again or purchase ones similar to those they wore during their youth.
These are some reasons why people buy vintage neckwear. They opt for the real thing over an imitation, which many times also bring back wonderful memories.
Jackie D. is the owner of Ties2Pillows, an online resource for Vintage Designer Necktie with the largest selection of Men’s Skinny Tie for sale on the web.
Ties are separated by era (1920′s through today’s), by style (wide, extra long, square end, knit, silk) and by pattern.
The site carries every novelty theme imaginable, including hard to find vintage unique novelty ties.

The Distinct Look of Vintage Rings
Owning a uniqe ring with a rich history is only possible with vintage rings. These rings were typically hand-made and have gone through a variety of styles over the years. These styles include a variety of precious gem stones including alexandrite, aquamarine, emeralds, and pearls.
Vintage Alexandrite Rings
Vintage Alexandrite rings have been recognized with blue blood or royalty. They have been indicative of higher socio-economic status during the eras of Kings and Queens.
The source of Vintage Alexandrite rings has been masked in ambiguity, though according to some, the Czar Alexander II of Russia discovered Alexandrite. Since then this gem has been adorned in rings, crowns, and pendants for princesses, queens and czars. In fact artifacts of Vintage Alexandrite rings have been found in the trinket of Empress Escretina, which dates back to 19th and 20th century.
Astonishing examples aside, this is often considered as one of the more expensive gems.
Vintage Aquamarine Rings

Aquamarine rings can be placed in platinum, white, or yellow gold base and are an ideal gift to be given to those who celebrate their birthday in March as it is their official birthstone.
The word “aquamarine” comes from Latin word meaning “sea water”. Emerald is a beautiful looking greenish mineral that has been named as the birthstone for May. The green stone looks gorgeous mounted in white or yellow gold and is generally with a mixture of emerald and/or diamond.
In some variations, sapphire is used to make a border encasing the emerald to give it a more attractive look. For engagement rings, these vintage emerald rings are would be a beautiful choice. The soft and soothing stone in old style of course is very desirable among the female wearers.
Vintage Pearl Rings

The town has good shopping and also makes a great adventure playground, where you can go hiking, jet boating, bungy jumping, white water rafting and what ever else your adventurous appetite can handle.
On my tour of the South Island we spent three days in Queenstown, and camped in our campervan right next to the lake.
Ski resorts
Although there is no snow to ski on during the summer, the chair lifts at the ski resorts still operate and you can get some amazing views from Coronet Peak and The Remarkables, which is well worth checking out.
Arrowtown
Arrowtown is a historic old gold mining town, located about 20 minutes drive from Queenstown. Sitting on the Arrow River which was rich in gold in the 1800′s, the town’s historic buildings are well preserved and walking it’s streets has a real old feel to it. There are also plenty of interesting shops and cafes to check out.
Jet boating
A visit to Queenstown should always include a jet boat ride! Flying across the water at incredible speeds while doing 360 degree spins is great fun. There are a lot of jet boating companies at a lot of different locations in Queenstown, but I found the best (and most daring) to be the Shotover Jet on the Shotover River. The jet boat speeds through the narrow Shotover gorge doing 360 degree spins where you think that you will smash into the sides of the gorge. It’s very exhilarating and I highly recommend the experience.
Steam boating
If jet boating isn’t your thing, or you just want a slower change of pace from all of the extreme sports that you have been participating in, then a steam boat cruise on Lake Wakatipu is perfect. The TSS Earnslaw is a vintage steam boat that does daily cruises on Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak High Country farm, where you can take a guided tour to see how a New Zealand sheep farm operates. They also offer evening dinner cruises, however I only did the day cruise to the farm which was nice and relaxing.
Skipper’s Canyon
Skipper’s Canyon Road is one of the most dangerous roads in New Zealand, and in fact hire cars are not insured if you drive on the road. Following along the Shotover River, the road is cut into the cliff side of the gorge, and at some points is 100m above the river. Taking a tour along the road is a great experience and the gorge is very beautiful. I found it incredible how the people had to cut the road by hand, all to gain access to the gold deposits in the river. Some scenes from “The Lord of the Rings” were also filmed in the canyon. Who knows how they got down there!
I could have easily spent a couple of weeks in Queenstown and would have never been bored. Anytime of the year is a great time to visit Queenstown.

What are some names of teen barbie dolls like Skipper?
My sister wanted skipper for her birthday, but when I do a search, all I can find is vintage ones. Are there other ones like Skipper that are still made?
Sorry, I am not trying to find a vintage doll. I am trying to find a doll that is made today.
Skipper is no longer in production. You can sometimes find Teen Skipper & her friends on ebay. These dolls were produced in the 1990′s.
Depending on her age, she might like the Top Model dolls or the Fashion Fever dolls. Both are lines by Mattel. The Fashion Fever dolls tend to appeal to younger girls.

Reborn Dolls and Kits for Collectors
Definitely a new hobby of creating reborn dolls is not for just any crafter or collector. But reborn dolls are making the scene throughout the earth. Although the craft of crafting dolls has been around for many generations, creating OoAK reborn dolls has evolved to highly tuned proportions over the past nine generations.
Artists creating dolls have studiously refined painting techniques to create more realism. They don’t stop at the beauty on the outside either, by including technical advancement elements such as a heartbeat simulator, these creations are truly life-like.
To restate, reborn dolls aren’t for everyone. To the uninitiated this is a strange obsession, but to the collectors who appreciate these creations, the act of making and owning these works of art provide an unique pleasure.
Although not everyone will love reborning, many can get started in the technique with a cheap purchase of a reborn doll kit. From the most basic and tiniest premature reborn doll kits to the napping toddler, you can add the enhancements as your needs develop. As touched upon earlier this could be a heartbeat simulator or a battery powered breathing add-on. Imagine a visitor’s surprise when they see a sleeping, breathing baby in a crib that has a real heartbeat{!}
Before we dive into a discussion on creating these dolls (from kits or scratch), let’s talk a little more about the finished product. The term reborn doll refers to a factory made baby that has been customized. The process of customization is to repaint and enhance the baby so that it resembles a human. As such, creating is called reborning.
Every doll is as personable as the artist who created it. Each has elements of beauty and artistry just like human babies. They come in every shape, length, and color imaginable today. You can purchase kits or create Caucasian, African American, Asian and East Indian dolls from a variety of shops – online or off.
Currently selling or vintage dolls used for reborning have been stripped of their factory finishing touches before being made over into a lifelike baby. If you visit http://www.angelsupply.com/reborn-dolls you will find hundreds of finished reborns to get an idea of this specialty craft.
Some of these are so realistic they make passersby do a double take. In fact it was told that in Australia last year, police officers broke in through a car window parked on the road to assist an unconscious baby from a locked vehicle. The baby retrieved was a reborn doll. The same happened in America in 2009.
Before you start thinking that the police in either country weren’t too aware you’ll have to see some of these creations. From their skin tone to their micro- rooted hair (done with special tools and techniques), a perfectly proportioned and weighted body, these babies not only look and feel real they also breathe.
From a true work of art to a starter’s kit, reborning baby dolls could be a lucrative hobby for many home crafters. In fact there are now many famous artists in this industry who sell their creations for thousands of dollars. However, should you choose to just keep this as a hobby you’ll want to enter slowly into the hobby and investigate the many hand tools, make up paint and embelishments available on the marketplace.
Those who buy Ooak, handmade reborn dolls are not only collectors. The market reports that these dolls are owned singly by women who yearn for a child of their own, or men and women who have lost a child and need a small helper to get through the worst of days. These babies’ chests rise and fall with every breath and when held closely emit a subtle heartbeat.
What other embellishments are available to make these dolls seem more true to life? Consider a reborn with a heating pack to maintain an internal temperature of 98.6F. Or a preemie including an incubator and an oxygen nasal tube. Popular smells are also available in sweet milk and baby powder type.

Tips to Buy and Sell Barbie Dolls Online
Tips to buy and sell Barbie Dolls online
It is not unnatural that the online sellers repent for not saving their Barbie Dolls when they come to know the big bucks behind pretty doll business.
Barbie, the doll which has been attracting the worldwide kids and elders since 1959, is available for wide range of prices from $5 to $5,000.
One has to know the nuances of doll business to buy or sell Barbies online. For example, just handful of profit you can see if you put up a classic Bubble-cut Barbie for sale at low opening bid with no reserve.
Web reference
Thanks to Internet, one can get lot of information, pictures, quotes and suggestions on doll collection through browsing hundreds of websites. However, three websites are worth watching for latest updates and vast information of Barbie dolls.
Doll Reference (http://www.dollreference.com/) is the best place to start off. This is a large, doll-collecting site, and the Barbie Menu is provided separately to find vintage Barbie & Friends of 1959 – 1976. There are more than 156 pages and nearly 2 thousand pictures in this section.
Official site for Mattel’s Barbie Dolls, Barbie Collectibles, (http://www.barbiecollectibles.com) cannot be ignored for your comprehensive information on Barbie Dolls business. From 1959 till today, it presents both classic and modern collection of Barbie Dolls and friends. Barbie fashions, newsletter to the members and space for showcasing member’s collection are the additional advantages of this website.
To get acquainted with the business lingo of Barbie Dolls, “Barbie Collecting Terminology” (http://www.dollectibles.com/terminology.htm) is a must watch. The website rolls out all kinds of letters/characters, abbreviations related to the title and their detailed information.
Tips to identify your Barbie
Markings encrypted on backside and back of the neck indicate the product details, in the absence of pictures. The condition of doll affects the cost like all other collectibles. Clothing, paint, torso, face and the condition of hair help you in determining the price. For a seller, it is important to know the advantages and disadvantage of these features. It is advisable that a buyer should ascertain the above, by sending an email or calling the seller if they are not found in the specifications.

It is a sad fact of life that some people are dishonest, others forgetful, and others misinformed about dolls. Just like in a real life transaction at a doll show or shop, you need to protect yourself from being “taken” by the less-than scrupulous when you buy or sell dolls on the Internet at such online auction houses like eBay or Amazon.com, or in person-to-person direct sales from web sites. Unlike real life, when you purchase a doll online, you can’t inspect it yourself. As a seller, your biggest fears are someone not paying you after the doll is sent, or someone returning a doll to you that is in worse condition than when you sent it. As a buyer, your biggest fear is getting NO doll at all after you have paid for it, or a doll that is in much worse condition than described. Here are some things you can do to help protect yourself in online transactions, as both a buyer and a seller:
BUYING:
1. Get REFERENCES: If you are dealing with an unknown person or entity, find out the names of other people who have had successful online transactions with the seller, and CONTACT THEM, via e-mail or phone.
2. Send a CHECK, and not a money order, whenever possible (this is the reverse of what you would prefer as a seller). You can stop a check, but there is little you can do about a money order if things go bad in the middle of a deal.
3. Get EXTENSIVE DESCRIPTIONS. Ask questions if the initial description is not detailed enough, and make sure you receive answers. If you sense resistance, or receive evasiveness or vague answers, PASS.
4. Get PICTURES whenever possible. If the seller is not equipped to send them via e-mail, then request them via snail mail (computer-speak for US Postal Service).
5. Get a RETURN PRIVILEGE; You WILL get dolls that are over-optimistically described, and you WILL use this privilege if you buy many dolls online.
6. Use COMMON SENSE: If something feels “off” about the doll, the seller, or the transaction, or you just get a bad feeling, LISTEN to your inner self, and pass on the doll. It isn’t worth taking a chance, and your inner warning system is usually reliable. The few times I have been “burnt” on a doll, if I had paid attention to my misgivings, I wouldn’t have been!
7. Don’t be RUSHED: If the seller is in an undue rush (desperate for money; family emergency, raising cash), your warning system should go off. Another doll will come along; PASS
8. Get a PHONE NUMBER and an ADDRESS. Don’t rely on an e-mail address and a post-office box; both can be ignored or disappear. Call the phone number.
9. KEEP CORRESPONDENCE: Keep all computerized correspondence until the doll is delivered, in case there is a dispute.
10. Do NOT Take Part In A THIRD PARTY Transaction: Don’t buy a doll from x who is either selling or shipping it for y. This is a recipe for disaster; you can get caught in the middle of a dispute between the two parties. This has happened to me; a lady went on a long vacation, left a doll with a friend to ship when my $$ were received. They had a dispute over postage and shipping costs (and, she stiffed her friend on the electricity bill). I had to pay postage and handling on the doll AGAIN (my cheapest option to get out of this), while the two parties continued to argue and I didn’t get my doll for nearly a month!
11. Does The Transaction Sound Too Good To Be True? Is someone offering you a perfect Jumeau for $500? RUN, quickly, in the opposite computerized direction.
12. Don’t Buy Dolls that are TOO EXPENSIVE Online: Set a limit that won’t be TOO painful if all of your precautions are of no use, and you get stuck with the dog doll of the century, or, even worse, no doll at all after payment. Remember, only YOU know what is too big a risk for you to take–for one person, it might be $50. For another, $5,000.
13. SHIPPING INSURANCE: It is a good idea to have this, in case your doll is lost or damaged in transit.
SELLING:
1. Get REFERENCES. Does the buyer pay their bills? Get e-mail and phone references from online transactions to make sure.
2. MONEY ORDERS AND CHECK CLEARANCE: When you sell, money orders are best for YOU. Money Orders are best. If you accept checks, make 100% sure it has cleared your bank before you ship the doll.
.3 Get a PHONE NUMBER and ACTUAL ADDRESS. Don’t rely on an e-mail address and post office box or a PMB. Call the phone number.
4. DISCLOSE ALL FLAWS: As mentioned above. Be 100% honest, or you will end up with unsuccessful transactions and returns!
5. Have POLICIES ON PAYMENT: Also as mentioned above, and stick to them
6. Offer a RETURN POLICY–I offer return for anything that is NOT as described (purchaser finds a flaw I didn’t describe, etc.) and a more liberal policy if asked for it up front.
7. Keep CORRESPONDENCE, DOCUMENTATION AND PICTURES: Since you DO offer a return policy, you need to protect yourself against the unscrupulous buyer who may return to you a DIFFERENT doll of the same type, which is in worse condition than yours (this is not very common, but could happen). I know one lady who sent out a mint #6 vintage Barbie, and what was returned to her was a very played with #6 Barbie. At least until the transaction is successfully completed, keep everything in case of a dispute.
8. Make The Buyer Purchase SHIPPING INSURANCE. It will help you have peace of mind, in case the box doesn’t arrive. Also, it gives you proof of successful delivery.
9. Ship PROMPTLY, and let your customer know when to expect shipment. If you are going on a one week vacation, and can’t ship that week, let your buyers know in ADVANCE so they don’t get nervous when their e-mails to you aren’t answered.
10. UPS VS. US MAIL?: This is a personal choice; I have had good luck with Priority Mail, Insured. My UPS packages are often received more mangled than my post office ones, because UPS ships so many heavy packages. BUT, UPS has a marvelous tracking service; you can track a package with your computer. So, for my very expensive or large dolls, I DO use UPS. Both services offer return receipts for a fee, and for expensive dolls, I would purchase this extra peace of mind.
11. PACK the doll well. You DO NOT want to have an expensive doll ruined in transit. You will have a headache to deal with, a ruined sale, and an unhappy customer.
I hope these tips are helpful; in future articles, we will cover buying and selling dolls via eBay and other online auctons, as well as buying and selling dolls via other methods on the Internet.

Making Vintage Jewelry
If you are looking for something unique when it comes to jewelry then you should consider looking for Vintage pieces. These pieces can date back eras and decades and there are many designs to choose when it comes to Vintage. The most popular of the periods are Early Victorian, Georgian, Late Victorian, Mid Victorian, Edwardian, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Retro. The designs from the Georgian time period tended to be handmade and the qualities were different. However, they are the rarest pieces on the market today. Most of them are nature inspired with birds and leaves. Precious stones were also used in these designs. The Victorian era came next and covered most of the 1800′s.
It consisted of Early Victorian from 1837 to 1850 which carried romantic pieces, Mid Victorian from 1860 to 1880 with grave designs and Late Victorian from 1885 to 1900 with more feminine pieces. The star and crescent designs popped up a lot in that era. The arts and Crafts era was from 1894 to 1923 and consisted of intricate designs. The jewelery was simple, colourful and made from uncut stones. The Art Nouveau styles were natural and were mostly butterflies and flowers. The next era was in the 1900′s and called the Edwardian era. The fashion was expensive gems like emeralds and rubies along with diamonds. Then the Art Deco jewelery appeared and was influenced from Africa, Egypt and Japan. Finally, Retro jewelery emerged in the forties and took its cue from Hollywood glam.
The fact is that Vintage Jewelery is making a big comeback these days with people searching for something special and unique. You can find a lot of costume and vintage jewelery which can be more than thirty years old and some even a hundred years old! However, the most popular vintage jewelry comes from the Victorian Era which boasts brooches, rings, watches, earrings, figure pins, Bakelite, lockets and cufflinks. There are even pieces for your hair. When you find one piece you like keep searching because you are sure to find a similar design within that era to add to your collection. During the Victorian Era, Queen Victoria had a huge influence on fashion and jeweley. The beginning and end of that era was bombarded in the Ferronieres style.
This featured chains and ribbons that had a jewel in the center and was meant to be worn on the forehead. Not only did the Queen own several pieces she also gave them away. Another piece was made up of hundreds of seed pearls sewn with mother of pearl and horsehair. These were very expensive pieces. The bodices and waists were tight in this era and women wore too much jewelry, especially rings. If you are interested in adding some vintage pieces to your jewelry collection you can find them at flee market and street fares and some garage sales. Another good source for vintage jewelry is estate sales. Some of these pieces can be quite costly, but for the vintage jewelry buff there is no price too high!
